Where Are the Anagram Islands?
The Anagram Islands are found in Antarctica. This is a very cold continent at the bottom of the world. They are part of a larger group of islands called the Wilhelm Archipelago. You can find them between the Roca Islands and the Argentine Islands.
Exploring the Islands
Many explorers visited the area around the Anagram Islands.
- The Belgian Antarctic Expedition explored here from 1897 to 1899. It was led by Adrien de Gerlache.
- The French Antarctic Expedition also explored the area. This happened in 1903-05 and again in 1908-10. Jean-Baptiste Charcot led these trips.
- Later, the British Graham Land Expedition visited from 1934 to 1937. John Riddoch Rymill was in charge.
Mapping the Islands
Early maps sometimes used the names Argentine, Roca, and Cruls for four island groups. These groups were on the south side of French Passage. In 1958, the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey made detailed maps. They used photos taken from a helicopter on HMS Protector. They also used information from the British Naval Hydrographic Survey Unit. This helped them correctly place the names given by the Belgian and French expeditions.
How They Got Their Name
After mapping, one island group still needed a name. The United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them the Anagram Islands in 1959. An anagram means changing the order of letters to make a new word. In this case, it means a "transposition of parts." This name was chosen because the islands' names had been moved around on maps before.
