Anarawd ap Gruffydd facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Anarawd ap Gruffydd was an important Prince of Deheubarth, a kingdom in Southwest Wales. He became ruler of Deheubarth in 1137 and sadly passed away in 1143.

Who Was Anarawd ap Gruffydd?

Anarawd was the oldest son of Gruffydd ap Rhys, who was also a prince. When his father died in 1137, Anarawd took over the leadership of Deheubarth. This made him a powerful figure in Welsh history.

Fighting for Wales

In 1136, Anarawd and his brother, Cadell ap Gruffydd, joined forces with Owain Gwynedd, the Prince of Gwynedd. Owain's brother, Cadwaladr ap Gruffydd, also joined them. Together, they planned an attack on Cardigan Castle. This castle was controlled by the Normans, who were people from France who had taken over parts of Wales.

They even had help from a fleet of Viking ships! However, instead of a big battle, they reached an agreement. The attack on the castle was called off.

A Royal Disagreement

In 1140, Anarawd once again supported Owain Gwynedd. This time, it was about a disagreement with the Archbishop of Canterbury. The argument was about who should be chosen as the Bishop of Bangor, an important religious leader. Anarawd stood by Owain in this important decision.

A Sad End

In 1143, Anarawd's life came to an end. He was killed by men who worked for Owain's brother, Cadwaladr. Many believed that Cadwaladr himself had ordered the killing.

This made Owain Gwynedd very angry. Anarawd was a strong friend and ally to Owain. They were even planning for Anarawd to marry Owain's daughter! To punish Cadwaladr, Owain sent his own son, Hywel ab Owain Gwynedd. Hywel took away Cadwaladr's lands in Ceredigion.

Who Ruled Next?

After Anarawd's death, his brother Cadell took over as the ruler of Deheubarth.

Anarawd also had a son named Einion ab Anarawd. Sadly, Einion was killed in 1163 by his own servant. It seems this happened because Roger de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford had ordered it.
