The Auckland teal or Auckland Islands teal (Anas aucklandica) is a special type of dabbling duck. This means it feeds by tipping its body forward in the water. It lives only on the Auckland Islands, which are south of New Zealand. This duck is "endemic" to these islands. This means it is found nowhere else in the world naturally.

Auckland teals used to live all over the Auckland Islands. But now, they only live on islands where there are no introduced predators. These safe islands include Adams Island, Enderby Island, Disappointment Island, and a few smaller ones.

What Makes the Auckland Teal Special?

The Auckland teal is smaller and much rarer than the brown teal. The brown teal lives on the main islands of New Zealand. People once thought these two ducks were the same species.

What Do They Look Like?

Auckland teals are mostly brown all over. Their neck feathers have a slight hint of green. They also have a clear white ring around their eyes. Female teals are a little darker than the males.

Their wings are very small. Like their relatives, the Campbell teal, Auckland teals cannot fly. They have lost the power of flight over time.

When Are They Active?

Auckland teals are mostly active during twilight (dusk and dawn) or at night. This is called being "crepuscular" or "nocturnal." They do this to hide from predators like New Zealand falcons and skuas during the day.

Where Do They Live and What Do They Eat?

These ducks live in many different places on the islands. They can be found in grassy areas, in areas with large shrubs, and near the coast. They mainly eat meat. Their diet includes small creatures from the ocean, insects, and other tiny invertebrates.

Auckland teals usually like to have their own space. They are "territorial," meaning they defend their living area. They rarely form large groups or flocks.
