Missions Soyuz T-5 \Soyuz T-7

Anatoly Nikolayevich Berezovoy (Russian: Анатолий Николаевич Березовой) was a brave Soviet cosmonaut. He was born on April 11, 1942, in a place called Enem, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He passed away on September 20, 2014, in Moscow, Russia, at the age of 72.

Anatoly Berezovoy is best known for his very long mission in space. He spent over 211 days orbiting Earth. This mission helped scientists learn a lot about how humans can live and work in space for extended periods.

Becoming a Cosmonaut

Anatoly Berezovoy grew up in a Ukrainian family. He became a pilot in the Soviet Air Force. His skills and dedication led him to dream of flying even higher.

In 1970, Anatoly was chosen to join the special group of people training to become cosmonauts. This was a very tough selection process. Only the best pilots and engineers were picked for space travel. He trained for many years, learning about spacecraft, space science, and how to survive in zero gravity.

His Big Space Mission: Soyuz T-5

Anatoly Berezovoy's most important mission was Soyuz T-5. He was the commander of this spacecraft. On May 13, 1982, he launched into space with his crewmate, Valentin Lebedev.

Their mission was to fly to the Salyut 7 space station. Salyut 7 was a research station orbiting Earth. It was like a small home and laboratory in space. Anatoly and Valentin became the first crew to live on Salyut 7.

Living in Space

Anatoly and Valentin spent a record-breaking 211 days aboard Salyut 7. This was a very long time to be in space. They conducted many scientific experiments. These experiments helped us understand how the human body reacts to long periods in space. They also studied Earth and the universe.

Life on the space station was busy. They had to exercise to keep their muscles strong. They also had to maintain the station and fix any problems that came up. It was a challenging but exciting job.

Spacewalk Adventure

During their mission, Anatoly Berezovoy also performed a spacewalk. This is when an astronaut goes outside the spacecraft. He spent 2 hours and 33 minutes outside Salyut 7.

Spacewalks are very important for repairing and upgrading space stations. They are also incredibly dangerous. Cosmonauts wear special suits to protect them from the harsh space environment. This spacewalk was a key part of their mission.

After Space

Anatoly Berezovoy returned to Earth on December 10, 1982. He had spent more than seven months in space. This made him a hero in the Soviet Union. He was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

He continued to work in the space program. In 1992, he retired from being a cosmonaut. After that, he served as a Deputy President for the Russian Space Federation until 1999. He helped guide Russia's space efforts.

Anatoly Berezovoy's contributions helped pave the way for future long-duration space flights. His work on Salyut 7 taught us a lot about living in space.
