Ancer Lee Haggerty (born August 26, 1944) is a retired federal judge from the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. He was chosen by President Bill Clinton to become a federal judge in 1993. Before that, he worked as a judge in Oregon's state court system.
Early Life and Education
Ancer Lee Haggerty was born in Vanport, Oregon. He went to the University of Oregon and earned a degree in 1967. After college, he served in the United States Marine Corps from 1967 to 1970.
After his military service, he went to law school. He studied at the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco. He earned his law degree in 1973.
Career
After finishing law school, Haggerty started his career in law. In 1973, he worked as a law clerk in Portland, Oregon. He then became a staff attorney for the Metropolitan Public Defender in Portland. He worked there from 1973 to 1977.
From 1977 to 1988, he worked as a private lawyer in Portland. He then became a judge for the Multnomah County District Court in Oregon. He served in this role from 1989 to 1990. After that, he became a judge for the Multnomah County Circuit Court. He was a circuit court judge from 1990 to 1993.
Federal Judicial Service
On November 19, 1993, President Bill Clinton nominated Ancer Lee Haggerty. He was chosen to be a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Oregon. The United States Senate approved his nomination on March 25, 1994. He officially became a judge on March 28, 1994.
Judge Haggerty served as the chief judge of the court from 2002 to 2009. The chief judge is like the main leader of the court. On August 26, 2009, he took senior status. This means he continued to be a judge but with a reduced workload. At the end of 2014, he took inactive senior status. This means he is still a member of the court but no longer hears cases.
Important Cases
Judge Haggerty presided over an important trial involving a group that promoted hateful ideas. This case was about holding people accountable for actions linked to these ideas. It showed how important judges are in making sure justice is served for everyone.
