André Cayatte (born February 3, 1909, in Carcassonne – died February 6, 1989, in Paris) was a talented French filmmaker, writer, and lawyer. He became famous for making movies that explored important ideas about crime, fairness, and what people are responsible for. His films often made audiences think deeply about right and wrong.
Cayatte began his career as a director at a company called Continental Films when France was occupied. He quickly became known for his unique style. Some of his early films that showed his interest in justice include Justice est faite (which means Justice is Done; 1950) and Nous sommes tous des assassins (We Are All Murderers; 1952). Another notable film was Le passage du Rhin (Tomorrow Is My Turn; 1960).

Exploring Different Views in Film
In 1963, André Cayatte tried something very new and exciting in filmmaking. He created two movies that told the same story from two different perspectives. These films were Jean-Marc ou La vie conjugale (Anatomy of a Marriage: My Days with Jean-Marc) and Françoise ou La vie conjugale (Anatomy of a Marriage: My Days with Françoise).
A Unique Storytelling Idea
Imagine watching a story about a marriage, first from the husband's point of view, and then from the wife's. That's exactly what Cayatte did! This allowed viewers to understand how two people can experience the same events very differently. It was a clever way to show how complex relationships can be.
Awards and Recognition
André Cayatte's films were often recognized with important awards. For example, his 1973 movie, Il n'y a pas de fumée sans feu, won the Silver Bear Special Jury Prize at the 23rd Berlin International Film Festival. This award showed how much his work was appreciated around the world.
