André's Early Life
André Lotterer was born in Duisburg, Germany. He has a German-Peruvian father and a German mother. When he was very young, his family moved to Nivelles, Belgium. This is where he started his racing journey. He began karting, which is a type of racing with small open-wheel cars, when he was just seven years old.
Racing in Endurance Races
After being a test driver for Jaguar in Formula One, André moved to Japan. There, he became a big star in Japanese motorsport. He won the Super GT Championship in 2006 and 2009. He also won the Formula Nippon Championship in 2011.
André first raced in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 2009. He was a last-minute replacement driver for the private Audi team. He and his teammate, Charles Zwolsman Jr., drove the entire race by themselves! Their third driver got hurt before the race. They finished 7th overall in an Audi R10 TDI, which was a car that had won Le Mans before.
His great performance in 2009 earned him a spot with the main Audi Sport team for the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans. He drove the new Audi R15 TDI. With his teammates Marcel Fässler and Benoît Tréluyer, he finished 2nd.
In 2011, André stayed with Audi Sport for the 2011 24 Hours of Le Mans. They drove the new Audi R18. After two of the Audi cars crashed, André and his teammates had to fight hard. They beat three rival Peugeot cars to win the race by only 13 seconds! This was André's first win at Le Mans. It also gave Audi their 10th overall victory there.
From 2012 to 2016, André competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). He continued to race for Audi Sport Team Joest. In the very first WEC season in 2012, André and his teammates won the drivers' championship!
After Audi left the WEC in 2017, André moved to Porsche. He raced the No. 1 car with Nick Tandy and Neel Jani. When Porsche also left the top class of WEC after 2017, André joined Rebellion Racing for the 2018–19 season.
André returned to the WEC in 2023 with Porsche's new Hypercar team. He raced with Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor. He said it felt strange to be back after almost four years away. In 2024, André won the drivers' championship for the second time in his career! This was 12 years after his first WEC title. In December 2024, André joined Genesis to help develop their new racing car.
Racing in Single-Seater Cars
André has also raced in cars where the driver sits alone, like Formula One and Formula E.
Formula One
André tested Jaguar Formula One cars from 2000 to 2003. He did very well in German and British Formula 3 races. This led to him becoming Jaguar Racing's test driver in 2002. However, he didn't get a full race seat at that time.
In 2002, André also raced in one Champ Car event. He scored a point at the Mexico City track.
Racing for Caterham
Twelve years later, in 2014, André got his chance in Formula One. He replaced Kamui Kobayashi for one race at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix. He qualified 21st, which was better than his teammate. But his race ended on the very first lap because of a mechanical problem. He was asked to race again at the Italian Grand Prix, but he said no. The team wanted another driver to practice in his car, and André wanted all the practice time he could get since he was new to F1.
Formula E
André joined Formula E in 2017, racing for the Techeetah team. His first race weekend in Hong Kong was tough. But he soon got his first podium (a top-three finish) in Santiago, Chile. He finished 8th overall in his first Formula E season.
In 2019, André almost won the 2019 Hong Kong ePrix. He led most of the race but was hit by another driver near the end, causing a tire puncture. He finished 14th. He later got his first pole position (starting from the very front) in Formula E at the Rome ePrix. He finished that race in second place. He ended the 2018–19 season in 8th place again.
Racing for Porsche

In 2019, André joined the new TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team. He started strong, finishing 2nd in his first race with them. He also got pole position at the Mexico City E-Prix, but had to retire from the race later. He finished 8th overall in the 2019–20 season.
André continued with Porsche for the next two seasons. He had a second-place finish in Valencia in 2021. In 2022, he also got a second place in Mexico City.
Racing for Andretti

André was planning to leave Formula E after the 2021–22 season. But he decided to join the Avalanche Andretti team for 2023. He finished the season in 18th place, while his teammate Jake Dennis became the champion. On September 8, André announced he was leaving Formula E to focus only on the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Reserve Driver for Porsche
Even though he left full-time Formula E racing, André still helps out. He returned to the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team as their test and reserve driver in 2024.
André's Life Outside Racing
As of 2004, André lived in Tokyo, Japan. He has since moved to Monaco. He often visits Nivelles, Belgium, where he grew up. He also visits his hometown of Renningen, Germany.
When he's not racing, André enjoys many hobbies. He loves cycling, collecting and driving classic cars, and photography. He also likes driving buggies and trying new foods. André is good friends with Jean-Éric Vergne, who was his teammate in Formula E. He is also friends with former racing driver Allan McNish.
