André Salmon was a French poet, art critic, and writer. He was born in Paris on October 4, 1881, and passed away in Sanary-sur-Mer on March 12, 1969. Salmon was one of the first people to support a new art style called Cubism, along with his friends Guillaume Apollinaire and Maurice Raynal.

André Salmon's Life Story

André Salmon was born in Paris. His father, Émile-Frédéric Salmon, was a sculptor and artist. His family moved often and sometimes faced money problems.

André's schooling was not always regular. From 1897 to 1902, he lived in St-Petersburg, Russia. He was there first with his parents, and later worked as an assistant at the French consulate.

In 1902, Salmon returned to France for military service. However, he was released after a few months because he was not strong enough. In the early 1900s, he spent time with writers in Paris's Latin Quarter. There, he met a young poet named Guillaume Apollinaire. They became part of an artistic group with other young artists.

In 1904, André Salmon moved into a famous building called the Bateau-Lavoir. He lived there with artists like Pablo Picasso and Max Jacob, as well as Apollinaire. He lived a free-spirited life for several years. Later, he fell in love with Jeanne Blazy-Escarpette. He started working as a journalist for newspapers like L'Intransigeant. He married Jeanne on July 13, 1909.

During World War I (1914–1918), Salmon joined the army as a volunteer. He served in the trenches, which were long ditches where soldiers fought. He became ill in 1916 and returned to Paris.

Back in Paris, Salmon helped organize art shows. One important show was L'Art Moderne en France in 1916. It was held for a famous fashion designer named Paul Poiret. This exhibition, also known as the "Salon d'Antin", showed works by artists like Pablo Picasso, who displayed his famous painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon for the first time. Other artists included Amedeo Modigliani and Marie Vassilieff.

In the years that followed, Salmon continued to work as a journalist. He also published his own poems, short stories, and essays about art. From 1928, he worked for a newspaper called Le Petit Parisien as a court reporter. In the 1930s, he had money troubles and had to write for smaller newspapers.

During World War II (1939–1945), he worked as a war reporter in Beirut. After France was taken over, he returned to Paris. He rejoined Le Petit Parisien. After France was freed, Salmon faced difficulties for his work as a journalist during the war. He had to publish his writings using a different name for five years.

His wife, Jeanne, passed away in 1949. He remarried in 1953. In 1961, he moved from Paris to Sanary, where he had built a small house. In 1964, André Salmon received a major award for his poetry from the French Academy.

He died on March 12, 1969, at his home in Provence.
