He started as a graduate assistant and later became the director of basketball operations.

Andre McGee resigned from his assistant coach position on October 23, 2015, due to issues that arose during his time at Louisville.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Andre McGee grew up in Moreno Valley, California. He attended Canyon Springs High School. During his senior year, he was a star player for his high school team. He averaged 22.3 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.7 steals per game.

College Basketball Career

McGee played college basketball for the Louisville Cardinals men's basketball team. He was part of the team for four seasons, from 2005 to 2009. In his final year, he was the starting point guard for the team.

He played in 127 games during his college career, starting 57 of them. On average, he scored 5.2 points per game for the Cardinals. His team performed well in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. They reached the Elite Eight in both the 2008 and 2009 tournaments.

Professional Playing Experience

After college, Andre McGee played professional basketball in Germany. He joined Phoenix Hagen in the Basketball Bundesliga league. He played 14 games for the team. In these games, he averaged 5.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists. He left the team in December 2009.

Coaching Journey and Later Career

Andre McGee returned to Louisville in 2010. He joined Rick Pitino's coaching staff as a graduate assistant. In 2012, he was promoted to director of basketball operations at Louisville.

After the 2013–14 season, he left Louisville. He became an assistant coach at UMKC. He worked under Kareem Richardson, who was also a former Louisville assistant.

During his time at Louisville, some issues came to light regarding rule violations. As a result, Louisville decided not to participate in post-season games for the 2015–16 season. The NCAA, which oversees college sports, later placed the Louisville Cardinals on probation for four years. They also issued a 10-year penalty for McGee, which meant he could not coach in college sports during that time. After an appeal, the Cardinals were also stripped of their 2013 national championship. This made them the first Division I basketball team to lose a national title.
