Andre's Musical Roots
Andre grew up experiencing special French Creole (La-La) dances. His grandparents held these dances at their church, St. Mark's Catholic Church. The best Zydeco musicians from Louisiana would travel to California to play at these events. They often stayed at the Pitre family home.
One day, the famous "King of Zydeco," Clifton Chenier, visited. He picked up three-year-old Andre and said he would be an accordion player someday. From that moment on, Andre's father encouraged him to play the accordion.
Learning the Accordion
Andre was fascinated by Clifton Chenier's music. He started teaching himself to play by listening to Chenier's songs. Andre showed a natural talent for music. His skills quickly grew. He played his first song, "Give’m Cornbread," in his grandparents' backyard. Soon, he was playing Chenier's music on stages across Northern California.
His grandparents kept inviting Louisiana musicians to their home. This helped Andre connect with his heritage. It also helped him develop his love for and skill in traditional French Creole music.
Forming a Band
By the time he was twelve, Andre formed his own band. With his mother's help, they called it "Zydeco Magic." Andre's list of songs grew. He was often asked to play with many visiting bands. These included the late John Delafose and his son, Geno Delafose. He also played with local Zydeco and Cajun bands, like the late Danny Poullard.
Andre's Musical Talents
Andre Thierry is a very skilled accordion player. While the accordion is his main instrument, he also plays other instruments well. He can play the bass guitar, rhythm guitar, and drums. He sings traditional songs in original Creole French. People describe his voice as rich and full of feeling.
