Andreas Hinkel (born March 26, 1982) is a German football coach and a former player. He played as a right-back. This means he was a defender who played on the right side of the field.

Hinkel played 21 games for the German national team. He was known for being good at both attacking and defending. He could run fast down the side of the field to help score goals. He was also strong in defense.

He started his professional career with Bundesliga team VfB Stuttgart in 2000. Later, he moved to the Spanish club Sevilla in 2006. In 2008, he joined the Scottish team Celtic. After his time at Celtic, he played for Freiburg in Germany.

Hinkel was part of Germany's team for Euro 2004. He played many important matches for his country.

Club Career Highlights

Andreas Hinkel played for several famous football clubs. He won many trophies with these teams.

Playing for VfB Stuttgart

Hinkel became a key player for VfB Stuttgart early in his career. In the 2002–03 season, his team finished second in the Bundesliga. This was a great achievement. Because of this, Hinkel got to play in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. The Champions League is a very big competition for top European clubs.

Time with Sevilla

On June 23, 2006, Hinkel signed a four-year contract with Sevilla in Spain. While playing for Sevilla, he won two major European trophies. He helped them win the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. These are big wins for any football player. However, he found it hard to get a regular spot in the team. This was because another great player, Daniel Alves, was also a right-back for Sevilla.

Joining Celtic F.C.

On January 4, 2008, Hinkel moved to Celtic in Scotland. He quickly became an important player for them. He played his first game for Celtic in a Scottish Cup match. A month later, he scored his first goal for the club. Celtic won the Scottish Premier League title that season. This was Hinkel's first league title medal.

The next season, Hinkel won another trophy. He helped Celtic win the Scottish League Cup. This was after a 2-0 win against their rivals, Rangers, in the final.

Hinkel played a very important role in a Champions League qualifying match in 2009. Celtic was playing against Dinamo Moscow. Hinkel helped set up the first goal. He also made a long pass that led to the winning goal in the last minute. He even saved two shots from going into his own goal.

Sadly, Hinkel suffered a serious knee injury in 2010. This kept him out of the game for many months. He left Celtic in 2011 after his contract ended.

Playing for SC Freiburg

After leaving Celtic, SC Freiburg signed Hinkel in October 2011. He played a few games for them. On September 10, 2012, Andreas Hinkel announced that he was retiring from playing football.

Andreas Hinkel played for the German national team 21 times. He made his first appearance in 2003. He was part of the German team for UEFA Euro 2004. This is a big European football tournament.

However, he missed the 2006 FIFA World Cup. This is the biggest football tournament in the world. He also wasn't called up for UEFA Euro 2008 or the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This was partly because he wasn't playing regularly for his club team, Sevilla. Also, another talented player, Philipp Lahm, became the first-choice right-back for Germany.

Managerial Career

After retiring as a player, Andreas Hinkel started a career in coaching. He worked with his former club, VfB Stuttgart, in different coaching roles.

Between 2014 and 2016, Hinkel was an assistant coach for Stuttgart's youth teams. He also helped with the first team and the reserve team. He started by managing the Under-12 team. He was also an assistant for the Under-16 team.

In 2016, he became an assistant manager for the main VfB Stuttgart team for a short time. Later that year, he became the manager of VfB Stuttgart II, which is the club's reserve team. He led this team until 2018.

In 2019, Hinkel returned to Stuttgart again as an assistant manager for the first team. He then became the manager of the reserve team once more.

In October 2019, he moved to Russia. He joined Russian Premier League club FC Spartak Moscow as an assistant coach. He worked there until 2021. He helped Spartak Moscow qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

After Spartak Moscow, Hinkel became an assistant coach for RB Leipzig in Germany from 2022 to 2023. Since 2023, he has been an assistant coach for the Belgium national team.
