Andreas Hinkel, born on March 26, 1982, is a German football coach and a former player. He played as a right-back, which is a defensive position on the right side of the field. Hinkel was known for his strong defense and for helping his team attack. He played 21 games for the German national team.

He started his professional career with Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart in 2000. Later, in 2006, he moved to the Spanish club Sevilla. In January 2008, he joined the Scottish club Celtic. After his contract with Celtic ended in 2011, he moved back to Germany to play for Freiburg. He had missed the entire 2010–11 season due to a serious knee injury.

Hinkel played 21 matches for Germany between 2003 and 2009. He was also part of their team for the Euro 2004 tournament.

Club Career Highlights

Playing for VfB Stuttgart

Andreas Hinkel played for VfB Stuttgart from 2000 to 2006. In the 2002–03 season, his team finished second in the Bundesliga, which is Germany's top football league. This success allowed Hinkel to play in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. The Champions League is a big competition for top European clubs. In March 2004, he had a knee injury that kept him from playing for a while.

Time at Sevilla

On June 23, 2006, Hinkel signed a four-year contract with Sevilla in Spain. While playing for Sevilla, he won the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. These are important European club competitions. However, he found it hard to get a regular spot in the team because another great player, Dani Alves, usually played in his position.

Joining Celtic F.C.

On January 4, 2008, Andreas Hinkel became a player for Celtic in Scotland. He played his first game for Celtic eight days later in a Scottish Cup match, which Celtic won 3–0. A month later, he scored his first goal for Celtic in a 3–0 win against Hearts. That season, Celtic won the Scottish Premier League title, giving Hinkel his first league championship medal.

The next season, Hinkel helped Celtic win the Scottish League Cup. They beat their rivals Rangers 2–0 in the final match.

Hinkel played a very important role in Celtic's win against Dinamo Moscow in the UEFA Champions League qualifying round on August 5, 2009. He helped set up the first goal and also cleared two shots off the goal line. Celtic won that game 2–0. Hinkel played in 29 Scottish Premier League matches that season.

For the start of the 2010–11 season, Hinkel was not chosen to play in the first match. The next week, he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in his knee. This type of injury meant he could not play for about nine months. He started training again in January. On July 1, 2011, Hinkel left Celtic when his contract ended.

Moving to SC Freiburg

On October 6, 2011, SC Freiburg signed Hinkel. He joined them on a free transfer, meaning no money was paid for him.

On September 10, 2012, Andreas Hinkel announced that he was stopping his playing career right away.

International Career for Germany

Andreas Hinkel played for the German national team 21 times. His first game for Germany was in 2003 against Serbia and Montenegro. He was part of the German team for UEFA Euro 2004, a big European football tournament. He had recovered from his knee injury just in time for this event.

However, he did not play in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. When he was playing for Sevilla, he didn't get much playing time, which made it harder for him to be called up for the national team. Also, another player named Philipp Lahm became the main right-back for Germany. Hinkel was also not selected for UEFA Euro 2008 or the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
