Andreas Mikkelsen's Racing Journey
Andreas Mikkelsen has always been a talented athlete. Before he started rallying, he was a skilled alpine skiing racer, even joining the national junior team for slalom and giant slalom. He also competed in motocross as a junior.
Early Years with Ford (2006–2010)
When Andreas turned 17, he got his British driver's license. This allowed him to start competing in rally races in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He quickly showed his talent, winning several rallies like the Quinton Stages and the Saaremaa Rally in Estonia, driving a Ford Focus RS WRC.
Andreas made his first appearance in the World Rally Championship at the 2006 Wales Rally GB. In the 2007 season, he raced in eight WRC events. He also took part in the Irish Tarmac Championship and the Norwegian Rally Championship. He finished ninth at the 2007 Rally Ireland, which was a good result for him.
For the 2008 season, Andreas received special training from Marcus Grönholm, a retired Ford world champion. Andreas achieved his best WRC result yet by finishing fifth at the 2008 Swedish Rally. This made him the youngest driver ever to score points in a WRC event at that time.
In 2010, Andreas competed in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). He drove a Ford Fiesta S2000 and finished second at the 2010 Rally Scotland. He ended up seventh in the overall IRC standings. He also won the SWRC class at the final WRC event of the season, the 2010 Wales Rally GB.
Dominating with Škoda (2011–2012)
After his strong performance in 2010, Andreas joined the Skoda UK Motorsport team for the 2011 IRC season. He had a challenging start but turned things around at the Sata Rallye Açores, where he finished second. This was his first podium finish in the IRC.
Going into the last rally of the 2011 season, five drivers were still in the running for the championship. Andreas won the Rally Cyprus and took home the title, becoming the youngest person ever to win the IRC. He continued his strong performance in the 2012 season, winning the championship again after victories in Azores and Romania. He also secured five second-place finishes. Andreas was the first driver to win the IRC (now called ERC) two times in a row.
Years with Volkswagen (2013–2016)
From 2013 to 2016, Andreas raced for Volkswagen Motorsport II, driving their powerful Volkswagen Polo R WRC car. In 2013, he didn't reach the podium but won several special stages, finishing 10th overall.
The year 2014 brought much better results. He finished second three times and third twice, ending the year in an impressive third place in the championship standings. In 2015, he achieved his first rally victory in Spain. He also had seven third-place finishes, which helped him secure another third place in the world championship.
Andreas continued his success in 2016 with two more wins in Poland and Australia. He also had two second-place finishes. This meant he finished third in the championship overall for the third year in a row! Volkswagen decided to leave WRC at the end of 2016, which meant Andreas needed a new team for 2017.
Switching Teams (2017)
In early 2017, Andreas competed in three rounds of the WRC-2 series with a factory Škoda Fabia R5. He won both the Monte Carlo Rally and the Tour de Corse events. Later that year, he joined the Citroën World Rally Team, making his debut in Italy with a Citroën C3 WRC. After finishing second in Germany, Andreas signed a deal to join Hyundai Motorsport for the 2018 season. He finished fourth in the Welsh Rally GB before the end of 2017.
Time with Hyundai (2018–2019)
The 2018 season started well for Andreas with a third-place finish in Sweden. However, he faced some challenges later in the year and finished 6th overall. The 2019 season was much better. Even though he missed or retired from some events, Andreas achieved one second-place finish and two third-place finishes. He ended the season in 4th place overall. His contract with Hyundai was not renewed at the end of 2019, leaving him without a WRC drive for a short period.
Testing and New Challenges (2020)
Without a full-time drive in 2020, Andreas helped with tire testing for Pirelli. He even co-drove for the 2003 World Drivers' Champion, Petter Solberg, during the Rally Sardegna shakedown and power stage. At the Rally Monza, he finished 6th in WRC-2 and won the WRC-3 category with Eurosol Racing Team.
Success with Toksport WRT and Škoda (2021–Present)
In 2021, Andreas joined Toksport for a combined WRC-2 and ERC campaign, driving a Škoda Fabia R5/Rally2 evo. He made history by becoming the first driver to win both the WRC-2 and ERC titles in the same year!
He continued with Toksport in 2022 and helped Škoda Motorsport develop their new Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 car. He won the WRC-2 title for a second time in 2023. As of July 2025, Andreas is still competing in the World Rally Championship with Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT.
