Life and career
Childhood and early career (1994-1998)
Andreea Bălan was born on June 23, 1984. Her parents are Săndel and Valeria Bǎlan. When she was young, people described her as a "very good child." She went to Ion Luca Caragiale High School in Ploiești.
Andreea started singing at age 10. Her father helped her learn and create songs. She performed these songs in children's shows in Ploiești. A music producer named Mihai Constantinescu noticed her. He invited her to be on the children's TV show Ba da, ba nu on TVR 1. She also appeared on other shows like Feriți-vă de măgăruș and Abracadabra.
During this time, she won several awards at children's festivals. The most important was the "Little Princess of Europe" award. She received it at the Little Prince International Festival, which had children from 16 countries. The President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, gave her this award.
In 1997, Andreea tried out for the Eurovision National Gala. She sang "Un univers mai liniștit." However, she was too young to compete and was disqualified. The next year, in 1998, Andreea Bălan became the first child in Romania to release an album on a compact disc. The album was called Amețiți de fum. It had 10 songs written by her father. Even though it was officially released, it wasn't sold everywhere because there wasn't enough money for distribution.
Andrè (1999–2001)
In late 1998, the music group Andrè was formed. It included Andreea Bălan and Andreea Antonescu. They had first met on the TV show Ba da, ba nu. The group quickly became very popular in Romania and other countries. Their music was aimed at teenagers.
Their first album, La întâlnire, came out in May 1999. Most of the songs were made by Săndel Bălan, Andreea's father. The album was a big hit, selling over 50,000 copies in just a few months. The group became popular because their music was simple and had catchy dance beats. They performed songs like "La întâlnire" and "Să ne distrăm" on TV shows.
In the summer of 1999, they released the song "Liberă la mare." This song became a signature hit for the group. It won first place at the Mamaia's Festival, making Andreea Bălan the youngest singer to win that award. Later that year, they released another album called "Noapte de vis." The song "Noapte de vis (Moșule, ce tânăr ești)" was very popular and had a music video.
Andrè released their third album, Prima iubire, in 2000. It featured hit songs like "Prima iubire" and "Lasă-mă papa la mare." Both songs were among the top 20 hits in Romania. In the same year, they released another album, Am să-mi fac de cap. This album included the songs "Am să-mi fac de cap" and "Flori de tei." The music video for "Flori de tei" was very expensive for its time in Romania, costing about US$12,000. It was also the first music video shot on film.
In early 2001, the magazine Bravo named Andrè the "Best band for teens." Their record label, Cat Music, gave the group special awards for selling 1.5 million albums. They were the first group to receive so many awards. The group briefly split up because of some disagreements. Andreea Bălan then tried to form a duo with Alina Sorescu, but this project ended after six months. During this time, a greatest hits album for Andrè was released.
The group Andrè later reunited for a short time. They released an album called O noapte și-o zi in 2001, with a single and video of the same name. However, they split up again after this. Throughout their time together, Andrè was known for their unique fashion style. They influenced young people with trends like platform heels, box braids, and mini skirts.
