Andrew George Lauterstein (born 22 May 1987) is an Australian swimmer who has won three Olympic medals! He is known for his strong butterfly and freestyle swimming.

About Andrew Lauterstein

Andrew grew up in Black Rock, Victoria, Australia. He went to Brighton Grammar School. Andrew has an older brother and a younger sister. When he was younger, Andrew was very good at sports. He played for the Victorian state football team. He also represented Australia in baseball on youth teams. When he was 16, he decided to focus only on swimming. Outside of swimming, Andrew enjoys being a DJ.

Andrew Lauterstein has competed in many big swimming events. He has won medals at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympic Games.

2007 World Championships

In 2007, the World Aquatics Championships were held in Melbourne, Australia. Andrew competed in the 100-metre butterfly race. He made it to the semifinals but did not reach the final.

He also swam in two relay races. In the 4×100-metre freestyle relay, Australia finished in fifth place. In the 4×100-metre medley relay, Andrew swam the butterfly part. His team won the gold medal! It was a very exciting race where his teammate, Eamon Sullivan, helped Australia win in the final leg.

2008 Olympic Games

The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, were a big success for Andrew. He won three medals!

He swam in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay. His team won a bronze medal.

In the 100-metre butterfly race, Andrew swam his fastest times ever. He set a new Australian record in each race. He won the bronze medal in the final. He finished just 0.01 seconds ahead of Ian Crocker, a world record holder! In that same race, American swimmer Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal of those Games.

Andrew also won a silver medal in the 4×100-metre medley relay. He swam the butterfly leg in this race too.

After the 2008 Olympics

After the Olympics, Andrew started training with a new coach, Grant Stoelwinder. This coach also trained other famous swimmers like Libby Lenton and Eamon Sullivan.

In 2009, Andrew showed great form at the Australian Swimming Championships. He set a new Australian record in the 50-metre butterfly race. He swam it in 23.30 seconds!

2009 World Championships

At the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome, Italy, Andrew continued to compete. In the 100-metre butterfly final, he set another Australian record. Even with this fast time, he did not win a medal in that race.

However, he did win another medal! He earned a bronze medal in the 4×100-metre medley relay. In the early races for this event, Andrew swam the 100-metre butterfly part in 50.16 seconds. This was one of the fastest butterfly splits ever recorded at that time.
