Eamon Wade Sullivan (born 30 August 1985) is an Australian former swimmer. He was known for his fast sprint freestyle races. Eamon won three Olympic medals and held world records in two swimming events. After his swimming career, he also won the first season of Celebrity MasterChef Australia. He then started several food businesses.

Eamon Sullivan's Swimming Career

Eamon Sullivan started showing his talent in swimming at a young age. In April 2002, he won the 50-meter freestyle at the Australian Age Championships. He also placed second in the 100-meter freestyle for his age group.

Early Olympic and Championship Races

In 2004, Eamon earned a spot on the Australian Olympic team. He was the youngest male swimmer on the team for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He helped the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay team reach the final.

In March 2006, Eamon won a gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. This was for the 4 × 100 meter medley relay. He also won a silver medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay. Later that year, he set a new Australian record for the 50-meter freestyle.

Setting New Records

Eamon continued to break records in 2007. He set a new Australian record for the 50-meter short course freestyle. He also set a national record in the 100-meter freestyle heats. These achievements showed he was becoming one of the fastest swimmers.

Olympic Success in Beijing

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Eamon had a very successful time. He started the men's 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay by setting a new world record for the 100-meter freestyle. Australia won a bronze medal in this relay.

In the individual 100-meter freestyle event, Eamon was the fastest in the heats and semi-finals. He and French swimmer Alain Bernard traded the world record back and forth. Eamon set a new world record of 47.05 seconds in the semi-finals. In the final, he won a silver medal, finishing very close behind Bernard.

Injuries and Retirement from Swimming

Throughout his career, Eamon faced many injuries. He had problems with his hip and shoulder. These injuries made it difficult for him to compete at his best.

In 2009, he had to miss the 2009 World Aquatics Championships due to a virus. Later that year, he had an appendectomy. He was part of the Australian Olympic swimming team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The team faced some challenges, and Eamon spoke to the media about them.

In 2014, Eamon made a comeback at the Australian Trials. He won the 50-meter freestyle, which earned him a spot on the Commonwealth Games team. However, in July 2014, Eamon announced he was retiring from competitive swimming. He said his ongoing injuries were the main reason for his decision.

World Records Held by Eamon Sullivan

Eamon Sullivan was known for breaking world records in sprint freestyle.

  • In 2008, he broke the 50-meter freestyle world record at the NSW Open Championships. He swam it in 21.56 seconds, beating the previous record.
  • His record was then broken by Alain Bernard of France.
  • However, Eamon quickly regained the 50-meter freestyle world record. He set a time of 21.41 seconds, and then broke his own record again with 21.28 seconds.
  • On August 11, 2008, at the Beijing Olympics, he broke the 100-meter freestyle world record. He did this during the first part of the 4x100 relay, with a time of 47.24 seconds.
  • A few days later, after losing his 100-meter world record to Alain Bernard, Eamon set another world record of 47.05 seconds. This record was later broken by César Cielo in 2009.

After his swimming career, Eamon Sullivan appeared on several TV shows.

  • In 2009, he won the first season of Celebrity MasterChef Australia. He beat other famous people like Kirk Pengilly and Rachael Finch.
  • In 2011, he competed in Australia's Greatest Athlete.
  • He also made a guest appearance on MasterChef Australia. He cooked the same dish that helped him win Celebrity MasterChef.
  • In 2013, he became a team captain on the Australian game show A League of Their Own.
  • Eamon also competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2014. He was the fourth person to be eliminated from the show.

Eamon Sullivan's Business Ventures

Eamon Sullivan always dreamed of owning a restaurant. After he retired from swimming, he started managing several restaurants in Perth, Western Australia.

  • In 2011, he opened a cafe called Louis Baxters in Subiaco. He later sold this cafe in 2017.
  • In March 2013, Eamon opened Bib & Tucker, a restaurant by the beach in North Fremantle. He owns this restaurant with other athletes, Steve Hooker and Jamie Dwyer.
  • In February 2015, he opened May Street Larder in East Fremantle. A second location opened in 2019 but closed in 2020. This location was then turned into two new places: Sammy's, a sandwich bar, and Pogo, a Middle Eastern restaurant.
  • In October 2018, Eamon also helped open Goody Two's. This is a Japanese whiskey bar located in Perth.

Personal Life

Eamon Sullivan went to high school at John XXIII College in Perth. In April 2016, Eamon married Naomi Bass, who is a lawyer. They have two children together. Their son was born in July 2017, and their daughter was born in August 2019.
