Andrew Manze, born on January 14, 1965, is a talented British conductor and violinist. He is especially known for playing Baroque violin music. Baroque music is a style of classical music from a long time ago, roughly between 1600 and 1750.
About Andrew Manze
Andrew Manze was born in Beckenham, England. He went to Clare College, Cambridge where he studied "Classics," which means ancient Greek and Roman history and literature. He also learned to play the violin. His teachers included Ton Koopman and Simon Standage, who were important figures in early music.
Andrew started his music career focusing on Early Music. This is music from before the Baroque period, like the Renaissance. He made many recordings as a solo violinist for companies like Harmonia Mundi. In 1996, he became an associate director of the Academy of Ancient Music.
From 2003 to 2007, Andrew was the artistic director of a group called The English Concert. He made many recordings with them. He was also a guest conductor for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from 2010 to 2014.
Outside the UK, Andrew was the main conductor and artistic director of the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden from 2006 to 2014. He recorded many famous pieces with them, including symphonies by Brahms. In 2014, he became the main conductor of the NDR Radiophilharmonie in Germany. He stayed with them until 2023.
In 2016, Andrew stepped in to conduct the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Germany for a special music festival. In April 2024, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) announced that Andrew Manze would be their next main guest conductor for three years, starting in the 2024-2025 season. He had first worked with the SCO in 2006.
Andrew Manze is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. He has also helped create new versions of sonatas and concertos by famous composers like Mozart and Bach. He teaches, writes about music, and appears on radio and television. In 2011, he received the Rolf Schock Prize for his musical achievements.
