Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Andrew Perne was an English church leader who lived a long time ago (1596-1654). He was a Puritan, which meant he had strong beliefs about how the church should be run. He was also an important member of the Westminster Assembly, a group that helped shape the church in England.

Andrew Perne's Life

Andrew Perne started studying at Peterhouse, Cambridge, a college at Cambridge University, in 1613. He was a "sizar," which meant he received financial help for his studies. He earned his first degree (B.A.) in 1618 and a higher degree (M.A.) in 1621.

After his studies, he became a "fellow" at Catherine Hall, another college at Cambridge, from 1622 to 1627. Then, he became the rector (a type of church leader) of Wilby, Northamptonshire.

His Role in the Westminster Assembly

In 1643, Andrew Perne was chosen to represent Northamptonshire in the Westminster Assembly. This was a very important meeting of church leaders and scholars. They met to discuss how the Church of England should be organized and what its beliefs should be.

During this time, he preached two sermons (religious speeches) to the House of Commons, which is part of the English Parliament.

  • The first sermon was on May 31, 1643, during a public day of prayer. This sermon was later printed.
  • The second sermon was on April 23, 1644. It was a thanksgiving for a big victory by Thomas Fairfax at Selby.

Andrew Perne passed away in Wilby on December 13, 1654. He was buried in his church, and there was a special message carved to remember him. A funeral sermon was also published in his memory.
