Andrew Toles' Baseball Journey
Early Baseball Days
Andrew Toles grew up in Tyrone, Georgia, and went to Sandy Creek High School. After high school, the Florida Marlins picked him in the 2010 Major League Baseball draft. However, Toles decided not to sign with them. Instead, he chose to play college baseball.
He went to the University of Tennessee and played for the Tennessee Volunteers. In 2011, he was named to the SEC All-Freshman team, which means he was one of the best new players in his college league. Later that year, he left the team. After the 2011 season, he played summer baseball for the Brewster Whitecaps and was chosen as an all-star.
Toles then moved to Chipola College in Florida. He had to take a break from their baseball team in 2012 because he didn't follow team rules.
Starting Professional Baseball
The Tampa Bay Rays chose Toles in the third round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. He signed with them and started his professional career. In 2012, he played for the Princeton Rays and had a good batting average of .281. Baseball America magazine called him the best athlete and fastest runner in the Rays' organization.
In 2013, Toles played for the Bowling Green Hot Rods. He was a star player, leading his league in batting average and hits. He earned many awards, including being named a Mid- and Post-Season All-Star. He was also recognized as the Rays' Minor League Player of the Year.
In 2014, Toles played for the Charlotte Stone Crabs. During this time, he faced some challenges and took a break from playing for a few months for personal reasons. He returned later that year. In 2015, Toles left the Rays organization and did not play professional baseball that year.
Playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers
After the 2015 season, Andrew Toles signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He started the 2016 season in the minor leagues, playing for teams like the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, Tulsa Drillers, and Oklahoma City Dodgers.
On July 8, 2016, the Dodgers called him up to the major leagues. Toles made his MLB debut as the starting center fielder. In his very first time at bat, he hit a double! He hit his first home run in August and his first grand slam later that month. Toles had an amazing rookie season, batting .314 in 48 games. His manager, Dave Roberts, said it was like a "dream" season. Toles continued to play well in the postseason, batting .364.
In 2017, Toles was part of the Dodgers' starting lineup on Opening Day. He was often the first batter in the lineup and played left field. However, in May, he injured his right knee and needed surgery, which ended his season early. In 31 games, he batted .271 with five home runs.
Toles played in 17 games for the Dodgers in 2018, batting .233. He spent most of that season playing well for the Oklahoma City Dodgers, where he batted .306 in 71 games.
Taking a Break from Baseball
Andrew Toles did not report to spring training in 2019. The Dodgers announced that he was dealing with a personal matter and would be out for a while. He was placed on a special "restricted list." He did briefly return to the team's training camp in April but left again a month later to be with his family. He did not play any games in 2019.
As of 2025, the Dodgers have continued to sign Toles to contracts each season since 2018. These contracts do not pay him a salary, but they allow him to have access to the team's health insurance. This support helps him with his personal health challenges.
Personal Life
Andrew Toles was born in Decatur, Georgia. His father, Alvin Toles, was also an athlete who played college football at the University of Tennessee and then played in the National Football League.
Andrew Toles has faced some personal health challenges. He has received support and care to help him with these challenges. The Los Angeles Dodgers have continued to support him by providing access to health insurance.
