Andrews is a city in West Texas. It is the main city of Andrews County. The city is located in the Permian Basin, a region known for oil. Andrews is about 30 miles east of New Mexico.
The city of Andrews was officially formed on February 2, 1937. Both the city and the county are named after Richard Andrews. He was the first Texan soldier to die in the Texas Revolution. In 2020, about 13,487 people lived in Andrews.

In 2020, Andrews had 13,487 residents. There were 4,512 households in the city. The population has grown quite a bit since 1940.

The people of Andrews come from many backgrounds. In 2020, about 38% of residents were White (not Hispanic). About 57% of residents were Hispanic or Latino. Other groups included Black or African American, Native American, and Asian people.
Andrews' Economy: Oil and Growth
Andrews' economy has always been linked to oil. The first oil well was drilled in 1929. Since then, Andrews County has become a major oil-producing area in Texas.
New Industries and Job Opportunities
Because the oil business can change, Andrews has looked for new ways to grow. One important area is waste management. Waste Control Specialists (WCS) has a large facility in Andrews County. This company handles different types of waste, including some radioactive materials. It provides about 130 jobs in the area.
Andrews has also worked to attract other businesses. In 1972, the Kirby Company opened a vacuum cleaner factory here. This factory, called "Kirby West," employs about 200 people. The city has also opened new business parks to encourage more companies to move to Andrews.
City Improvements and Development
Andrews has invested in many new projects. These include over $3 million in airport upgrades. A new $13 million loop road around the city opened in 2013. A new fire station and a $60 million hospital have also been built. More recently, a new jail and an expansion of city hall were started. These projects help the city grow and serve its residents better.

Students in Andrews attend schools in the Andrews Independent School District. The school district has built many new facilities.
Modern Schools for Students
In 2008, two new elementary schools opened. A $20 million performance center was also added at the high school. Andrews High School started giving laptop computers to every student in 2012. Younger students also received iPad tablets. These devices help students learn and can be taken home. Due to more students, new classrooms have been added to all schools. In 2018 and 2023, voters approved large bonds for new construction and renovations.
Higher Education Opportunities
The Andrews Business and Technology Center opened in 2006. It works with Odessa College and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. This center focuses on technology and offers distance learning. An expansion in 2013 added space for a nursing program.

Andrews County Veterans Memorial
This memorial was built in 2006. It honors residents of Andrews County who have served in the U.S. armed forces. It remembers soldiers from many different conflicts.
Andrews Bird Viewing Trail
Opened in 2007, this trail is a great spot for nature lovers. It has a short path along ponds. Visitors can use an observation deck and binoculars to watch birds.
ACE Arena
The county built ACE Arena in 2007. It is a large indoor space used for many events. A smaller outdoor arena was added next to it in 2012.
Andrews Splash Park
In 2013, the city approved a $2 million water park. This splash park replaced the old city pool. It offers a fun place to cool off.
Legacy Park and Museum
A historic home was moved to a new location in 2013. Plans were approved to turn it into a museum. This area, called Legacy Park, will also include a memorial for first responders.
