Andrzej Marian Olechowski (born 9 September 1947) is a Polish politician. He is known for helping to start the liberal conservative party Civic Platform in 2001. He did this with Maciej Płażyński and Donald Tusk. Olechowski also served as a government minister in Poland.

Early Political Career
Andrzej Olechowski held important roles in the Polish government. In 1992, he was the Minister of Finance in Jan Olszewski's government. This job involves managing the country's money.
Later, from 1993 to 1995, he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In this role, he represented Poland to other countries. He worked in the government led by Waldemar Pawlak.
Running for President
Andrzej Olechowski ran for president of Poland two times. In the 2000 presidential election, he ran as an independent candidate. He came in second place, after the person who was already president, Aleksander Kwaśniewski.
In 2002, he tried to become the president of Warsaw, which is the capital city of Poland. He was the candidate for the Civic Platform party. However, he did not get enough votes to move on to the second round of the election.
Moving Away from Politics
After his attempts to become president, Andrzej Olechowski started to step back from active politics. In July 2009, he left the Civic Platform party. He then began working with another group called the Democratic Party.
He ran for president again in the 2010 Polish presidential election. This time, he received only a small percentage of the votes, about 1.44%. He did not make it to the second round of the election.
Other Activities
Besides his political roles, Andrzej Olechowski has been involved in many other areas. He has worked as an Economist and held positions in various organizations. For example, he was an economist at The World Bank in Washington, D.C., from 1985 to 1987. He also worked at the National Bank of Poland.
He has been a member of the supervisory boards for banks like Citibank Handlowy. He also served as an economic advisor to President Lech Wałęsa in the 1990s.
Education Background
Andrzej Olechowski studied at the Central School of Planning and Statistics in Warsaw, where he earned his PhD in 1979. He also attended the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. He is a fellow of Collegium Invisibile, which is a group of top scholars.
