Playing Career Highlights
Andy Millen was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Early in his career, he won the Scottish Challenge Cup twice. He achieved this with Hamilton Academical. While playing for Kilmarnock, he played one game for the Scotland B team. This match was against the Wales B team.
Oldest Player Record
Millen became famous for playing at a senior level at an older age. On 5 May 2007, he played for St Mirren against Dundee United. This made him the oldest player to play in the Scottish Premier League. He was 41 years and 330 days old.
He broke the record held by Aberdeen goalkeeper Jim Leighton. Leighton was 41 years and 302 days old when he last played. Many people thought Millen's record was more impressive. This is because he played as an outfield player, which is more physically demanding than a goalkeeper.
Success with St Mirren
In November 2007, Millen temporarily took charge of the St Mirren team. This was for a match against Motherwell. The regular manager, Gus MacPherson, could not attend. The game ended in a 1–1 draw.
Millen decided to stop playing first-team football in June 2008. During his time with St Mirren, he won two important trophies. They won the Scottish Challenge Cup and the Scottish First Division. Both wins happened in the 2005–06 season. His last league game was on 15 March 2008 against Hearts. This set a new SPL record for the oldest player. He was 42 years and 279 days old. This was almost a full year older than the previous record.
Coaching and Management Roles
After retiring as a player, Millen continued working as an assistant manager. He worked alongside Gus MacPherson at St Mirren. When Danny Lennon became the new manager, Millen left the club. This allowed Lennon to choose his own coaching staff.
In July 2010, Millen became the assistant to Billy Reid at Hamilton Academical. He left the club in December due to a disagreement about his contract.
Return to Playing and New Coaching Roles
In January 2011, Millen briefly returned to playing. He signed for Queen's Park because of an injury to another player.
On his 46th birthday, 10 June 2011, he became assistant manager at Queen of the South. He left Queen of the South on 30 April 2012. This was after the club was moved down to the Scottish Second Division. He then became assistant to Mark Roberts at Ayr United. In December 2014, he became the caretaker manager for a short time after Roberts was let go.
In May 2015, Millen joined Greenock Morton. He was the Development Squad Manager. He left in May 2017 for another opportunity. He then took over the development squad manager role at Kilmarnock. Later, he became assistant manager to Alex Dyer. He left Kilmarnock in February 2021 when Tommy Wright became the new manager.
In March 2021, Millen returned to Greenock Morton. He is now the assistant manager there. He works under Gus MacPherson, who was his manager at St Mirren.
