Aneurysm facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

An aneurysm is like a small, balloon-shaped bulge that forms on the side of a blood vessel. Think of it as a weak spot in the wall of a tube that carries blood. This weakness can cause the wall to stretch out and form a bubble. Aneurysms often happen in important blood vessels, especially in the arteries at the bottom of the brain or in the aorta. The aorta is the largest artery in your body, coming directly out of your heart.

If an aneurysm gets too big, it can sometimes burst or break open. This can be very serious. The larger an aneurysm grows, the more likely it is to burst. Luckily, doctors can often treat aneurysms.

What is an Aneurysm?

An aneurysm is a swollen area in a blood vessel. It looks like a small balloon filled with blood. This happens when a part of the blood vessel wall becomes weak. When blood flows through this weak spot, the pressure pushes the wall outwards, creating a bulge.

Where Do Aneurysms Usually Form?

Aneurysms can form in any blood vessel, but they are most common in certain places.

  • Brain: Many aneurysms happen in the arteries at the base of the brain. These are called cerebral aneurysms.
  • Aorta: Another common place is the aorta. This is the main artery that carries blood from your heart to the rest of your body. An aneurysm here is called an aortic aneurysm.

Why Do Blood Vessels Weaken?

The walls of blood vessels can become weak for several reasons.

  • Diseases: Some diseases can damage blood vessel walls over time.
  • High Blood Pressure: Long-term high blood pressure can put extra strain on blood vessels, making them weaker.
  • Injuries: Sometimes, an injury can damage a blood vessel, leading to an aneurysm.
  • Genetics: In some cases, people might be born with blood vessels that are naturally weaker.

How Dangerous Are Aneurysms?

Aneurysms can be dangerous because they might burst. If an aneurysm bursts, it can cause bleeding inside the body. For example, a burst aneurysm in the brain can cause bleeding around the brain. This is a medical emergency.

What Happens if an Aneurysm Bursts?

When an aneurysm bursts, it can cause serious problems. The blood that leaks out can damage nearby tissues and stop them from working properly. The amount of danger depends on where the aneurysm is located and how much blood leaks out.

Can Aneurysms Be Treated?

Yes, aneurysms can often be treated. Doctors have different ways to fix them.

  • Monitoring: If an aneurysm is small and not causing problems, doctors might just watch it closely. They will check it regularly to see if it grows.
  • Surgery: For some aneurysms, doctors can perform surgery to repair the weak spot. They might place a small clip on the aneurysm to stop blood from flowing into it.
  • Endovascular Coiling: Another treatment involves using a thin tube called a catheter. Doctors guide this tube through blood vessels to the aneurysm. Then, they release tiny coils into the aneurysm. These coils fill the aneurysm and help the blood clot, which seals off the bulge.
