Angelino Medoro (1567–1631) was an Italian painter from the 1600s. He worked a lot in Latin America, especially in the area known then as the Viceroyalty of Peru. His art had a big impact on the famous Cuzco School art style.

Angelino Medoro's Life

Angelino Medoro was born in 1567. We are not completely sure where he was born in Italy. It was either in Rome or Naples. At that time, Rome was part of the Papal States, and Naples was part of the Kingdom of Sicily.

Medoro likely studied art in Rome. After his studies, he traveled to Seville, Spain. From there, he went to the New Kingdom of Granada, which is now Colombia. His only known artwork from Europe is a painting called "Flagellation of Christ" (1586) in Seville.

Medoro was one of the three main artists who started Peruvian colonial painting. The other two were Bernardo Bitti and Matteo da Lecce. Medoro's first known work in the Americas was Virgen de la Antigua. He painted this between 1587 and 1588. You can find it in the Santo Domingo church in Bogotá. In 1617, he painted a picture of Saint Rosa of Lima. This painting is at the Santuario Santa Rosa de Lima in Lima.

Medoro also taught other artists. Some of his students were Pedro de Loayza, Luis de Riaño, and Juan de Mesa.

After 1620, Medoro went back to Spain. He passed away in Seville in 1631.
