Fray Pedro Bedón Díaz de Pineda was a talented South American painter and a Dominican friar. He lived from 1556 to 1621. He was an important artist of the famous Quito School of art.
Life of Pedro Bedón
Pedro Bedón was born in 1556 in a city called Quito. At that time, Quito was part of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Today, this area is known as Ecuador.
When he was just 14 years old, Pedro joined the Dominican order. This meant he became a friar, a type of religious brother. He completed his studies in Lima, a big city. Later, he became a professor of philosophy at a college in Lima. He also learned how to paint from a skilled Italian artist named Bernardo Bitti.
Bedón's Art and Faith
Pedro Bedón had a passion for painting from a young age. After he recovered from a serious illness, he decided to use his free time to paint pictures. He especially loved painting images of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Many of his artworks can be found in convents in Quito and Santa Fe. People in his home country called him the "Fra Angelico of Ecuador." This was a great compliment, as Fra Angelico was a famous Italian painter known for his religious art.
Founding Convents
Pedro Bedón helped establish new religious communities. He founded the convent of La Peña in Quito. Later, he traveled to Rio-Bomba and started another convent there.
However, he soon returned to Quito. He had been chosen to lead the convent of La Peña as its prior. In 1619, he was selected to be the provincial of his order. This was a very important leadership role. He held this position until he passed away in Quito in 1621.
