Angola is a small community located in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. It is found next to the Angola Neck peninsula. This community sits on an inlet of Rehoboth Bay and is close to Delaware Route 24. Angola is a local hub for the Indian River Hundred, which is a historical land division.

Exploring Angola's Location
Angola is situated along Delaware Route 24. This road crosses a stream called Herring Creek right in Angola. The community is about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) (4 km) east of Hollyville. It is also about 5 miles (8.0 km) (8 km) northwest of Long Neck.
A Look Back at Angola's History
Angola got its name from people who came from the country of Angola in Africa. These people were brought to the area long ago. The nearby land, called "Angola Neck," has had this name since the 1600s. People from African backgrounds, known as Gullahs, worked on farms in this area for many years.
Angola in the 1800s
In 1800, Methodists in Angola started meeting at the Angola Schoolhouse. Later, in 1838, a church was built on Robinsonville Road. This church is now known as Conley's United Methodist Church.
The Angola post office opened its doors in 1836. Around the 1850s, a dam was built on Herring Creek. This created a pond called Burton's Millpond. There used to be a grist mill (a mill for grinding grain) at this dam.
In February 1876, strong winds blew a new church in Angola right off its foundation. By 1890, Angola was a very small place with only 12 residents.
Angola in the 1900s
Angola's population grew to 18 people by 1900. Around this time, the community was home to the Angola Grange. This was a social group that worked to help the community's economy.
By 1925, Angola's population had increased to 95 residents. In the early 1900s, the Angola Telephone Company provided phone service in the area. This happened after Sussex County allowed telephone companies to put up poles and lines along roads.
The community had a post office until 1937. In 1940, the population was 50 people. By 1955, Angola was described as having "a store and several houses." The store was the Burton store, an old country shop.
