History of Long Neck

Long Neck has a long history, dating back to a special document called a "patent." This patent, from the Georgetown Court House in Delaware, was given to a person named William Burton.

William Burton's Land Grant

The document, called "William Burton Patent for Long Neck," describes a piece of land on the west side of Delaware Bay. This land was named "the Long Neck." It was located on the south side of Rehoboth Bay and the north side of the Great River.

The patent described the land's boundaries using natural landmarks like a point of woods, a White Oak tree, and creeks. The land was about one thousand perches long and three hundred and fifty perches wide. This whole area was about one thousand acres of land.

The document states that William Burton and his family would own this land forever. In return, they had to improve the land and follow the laws of the government. They also had to pay a yearly rent of ten bushels of good winter wheat.

Long Neck's Growth Over Time

For much of the second half of the 1900s, Long Neck was not very crowded. Many people had mobile homes there, which they used as summer vacation spots. These visitors often came from bigger cities like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Maryland, Wilmington, Delaware, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

However, starting in the late 1990s, more and more people began to move to Long Neck permanently. New neighborhoods were built, including ones around golf courses like Baywood Greens. Another large development, The Peninsula, was started by famous golfer Jack Nicklaus. Today, Long Neck is seeing a lot of new homes and people moving in all year round.
