Angus Holden, 1st Baron Holden (born 16 March 1833 – died 25 March 1912) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Holden was very active in local government, serving as the mayor of Bradford many times. He also served in the House of Commons, which is a main part of the British Parliament, during two different periods between 1885 and 1900. Later in his life, in 1908, he was given the special title of Baron Holden.

Early Life and Family

Angus Holden was the oldest son of Sir Isaac Holden, who was also a politician and held the title of 1st Bt. His father lived at Oakworth House, near Keighley. Angus's mother was Marion Love, whose father was Angus Love from Paisley, Scotland.

Angus Holden went to school in Edinburgh and then at Wesley College in Sheffield. After his education, he became a partner in a family business called Isaac Holden & Sons. This company was known for "Wool Combing," which is a process of preparing wool for making fabric. Their main factory was called Alston Works in Bradford.

A Career in Politics

Angus Holden was a very active leader in his local community. He served as the mayor of Bradford several times. He was mayor in 1878, 1879, 1880, and again in 1886.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1884, Angus Holden tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for Knaresborough, but he did not win that election. However, in the 1885 general election, he was successfully elected as the very first MP for the Eastern Division of Bradford. He represented the Liberal Party.

Unfortunately, he lost this seat in the next election, the 1886 general election. After this, he served as mayor of Bradford one more time in 1886.

Returning to Parliament

Angus Holden did not give up on his political goals. In the 1892 general election, he was elected to Parliament again. This time, he represented the Buckrose Division in the East Riding. He continued to be an MP for Buckrose until he decided to retire from the House of Commons in the 1900 general election.

Later Life and Titles

In 1897, Angus Holden's father passed away. When this happened, Angus inherited his father's title and became Sir Angus Holden, 2nd Baronet.

A few years later, on 4 July 1908, he received an even higher honor. He was made a "peer," which means he was given a special noble title. He became Baron Holden, of Alston in the county of Cumberland. This meant he could sit in the House of Lords, another part of the British Parliament.

After Angus Holden's death in 1912, his son, the Honourable Ernest Illingworth Holden (born in 1867), inherited his titles. Ernest became the 3rd Baronet and the 2nd Baron Holden.
