Anil Madhav Dave's Life and Work

Anil Madhav Dave was known for his dedication to the environment and his work in politics. He believed strongly in protecting India's natural resources.

Early Life and Education

Anil Madhav Dave was born on 6 July 1956. His hometown was Badnagar, in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh. He earned his master's degree in commerce from Gujarati College, Indore. He studied Rural Development and Management.

During his college days, he became involved in student politics. He was even elected as the college president. He was also a cadet in the Air Wing of the National Cadet Corps. Later, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a volunteer organization.

Protecting the Environment

Anil Dave was very passionate about the Narmada River. He wanted to help bring it back to health. To do this, he started an organization called Narmada Samagra. This group worked hard to protect the river.

He believed that human actions were harming the Narmada River. He said that chemicals released into the river's surrounding areas were causing climate change. He warned that if people weren't careful, the river could "die."

He also thought that large river projects should be checked regularly. He felt that projects older than 20 years needed to be reviewed. This would help see what good they had done and what harm. He also supported natural farming. He was against using genetically modified seeds.

His Political Journey

Anil Dave was a Member of Parliament. He represented Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha. The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He served in this role starting in 2009.

He was part of several important committees. These included the Committee on Water Resources. He also served on the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. From March to June 2010, he was a member of the Parliamentary Forum on Global Warming and Climate Change.

On 5 July 2016, he became the Minister of State (MoS) with independent charge. This meant he was in charge of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. This was a big role in the Modi Government.

As Minister, he made a strong statement about asbestos. Asbestos is a material that can harm human health. On 15 August 2016, he said that its use should be slowly reduced and then stopped completely. He believed it was important for people's health.

His Passing Away

Anil Madhav Dave passed away on 18 May 2017. He had been unwell earlier in 2017. He was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. Sadly, efforts to save him were not successful.

He had special wishes for his funeral. In a will he wrote in 2012, he asked for his funeral to follow traditional rituals. He wished to be cremated on the banks of the Narmada River at Bandrabhan. This was a place where he had organized a river festival. He also asked people to plant and save trees if they wanted to remember him.

His wishes were honored. His funeral took place in Bandrabhan, on the banks of the Narmada River. It was held with full state honors.
