Alice Bueñaflor Lake (born November 23, 1924 – died June 10, 2020), known to many as Anita Linda, was a famous Filipino actress. When she was young, she often played romantic main characters. As she got older, she became well-known for playing amazing motherly or elderly roles. She made history at 74 years old by becoming the oldest actress to win a FAMAS Award. This was for her role as Best Supporting Actress in the movie Ang Babae sa Bubungang Lata.

In 2008, when she was 83, she won Best Actress at the 10th Cinemanila International Film Festival. This was for her role in the movie Adela.

Becoming an Actress

Anita Linda was born Alice Bueñaflor Lake in Pasay. Her father, James Lake, was an American soldier and mining engineer. Her mother, Gorgonia Bueñaflor, was from Iloilo.

A famous director named Lamberto Avellana discovered Anita Linda. She was watching a stage show at the Avenue Theater. At that time, she was a teenager from Iloilo and could not speak Tagalog very well. She was unsure about becoming an actress when asked backstage. But Avellana encouraged her to come for rehearsals.

Her first acting job was in a play called High School, where she had no speaking lines. Then she acted in Biyernes sa Quiapo and Aksesorya on stage. Avellana later gave her the stage name Anita Linda. He cast her in Tia Juana, her first movie with LVN Pictures. This movie was finished just before the Japanese invasion of the Philippines but was released in 1943.

During World War II, movie studios closed down. Anita Linda spent those years performing in stage shows called bodabil at the Avenue Theater in Manila. After the war, in 1947, she joined Premiere Productions. There, Avellana cast her in Sekretang Hong Kong. Her first main role was in the 1947 movie Alyas Sakim.

In 1951, Anita Linda played the main character in Gerardo de Leon's movie Sisa. This film was based on a sad character from Jose Rizal's famous novel Noli Me Tangere. For this role, she won the Best Actress Maria Clara award, which was a very important award back then.

In the 1970s, Anita Linda became famous again for playing motherly roles. She worked with director Lino Brocka in movies like Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (1974), Isa Dalawa Tatlo (1974), and Jaguar (1979).
