Anna's History
Ancient Times and Native American Stories
Millions of years ago, a huge river called the Teays River flowed where Anna is now. This river left behind loose dirt on a fault line, which is like a crack in the Earth's crust. This made the area more likely to have earthquakes.
Native American stories say that a famous leader named Tecumseh tried to form alliances here. When some tribes like the Shawnee and Miami said no, he supposedly put a "curse" on the land. This curse said the ground would always shake, which some people connect to the earthquakes that have happened in Anna.
How Anna Was Founded
People started settling in the area that would become Anna in the 1830s. The village was officially planned out in 1868. It was named after a person named Anna Thirkield. Anna became an incorporated village in 1877, meaning it officially became its own town with its own local government.
The Big Earthquakes of 1937
Anna is known for a series of earthquakes that happened in 1937. On March 9, 1937, the biggest earthquake ever recorded in Ohio shook the village. It measured 5.4 on the Richter magnitude scale. This earthquake was so strong that people felt it as far away as Chicago and Toronto!
Just a week before, on March 2, there had been a slightly weaker earthquake. The 1937 earthquakes caused a lot of damage in Anna. The local Lutheran and Methodist Churches were badly hit. The school was so damaged that it had to be completely rebuilt. Even the town hall was damaged, and its top floor hasn't been used since.
The area around Shelby County has had at least 40 earthquakes since 1875. This is why Anna earned its nickname, "The Earthquake Capital of Ohio."
