About Anna Ancher
Anna Kirstine Brøndum was born in Skagen, Denmark. Her parents were Ane Hedvig Møller and Erik Andersen Brøndum. She was the only Skagen Painter who was born and grew up in Skagen. Her father owned the Brøndums Hotel there. Anna showed her artistic talent from a young age. She learned about art from the many artists who came to paint in Skagen.
She studied drawing for three years in Copenhagen. This was at the Vilhelm Kyhn College of Painting. There, she developed her own unique style. She was one of the first artists to really study how different colors looked in natural light. She also studied drawing in Paris. She learned at the studio of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. Another Skagen painter, Peder Severin Krøyer, would later marry her fellow student, Marie Triepcke.
In 1880, Anna married another painter, Michael Ancher. They had met in Skagen. They had one daughter named Helga Ancher. Even though many people thought married women should only focus on their homes, Anna kept painting after she got married.
Her Art Career
Anna Ancher was seen as one of Denmark's best artists. She was very good at painting people and using colors. Her art showed a new way of painting reality in Nordic art. Examples of her work include Blue Ane (1882) and The Girl in the Kitchen (1883–1886).
Her Painting Style
Ancher loved to paint indoor scenes. She also painted simple moments from the daily lives of people in Skagen. These often included fishermen, women, and children. She was very interested in how light and color worked together. You can see this in her painting Interior with Clematis (1913). She also made more complex paintings, like A Funeral (1891). Anna Ancher's artworks were often shown in other countries. She was known for painting people from the Skagen art community, like an old blind woman.
Awards and Recognition
Anna Ancher showed her paintings at a big exhibition in Chicago, Illinois. This was at the Palace of Fine Arts during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. She received the Ingenio et Arti medal in 1913. In 1924, she was given the Tagea Brandt Rejselegat award.
Her work was also part of a special art show in 2018. This exhibit was called Women in Paris 1850-1900.
Her Home in Skagen
Anna and Michael Ancher bought their house in Skagen in 1884. In 1913, they added a large art studio to the house. Today, this house and studio are a museum. It is dedicated to both Anna and Michael Ancher. When their daughter, Helga Ancher, passed away in 1964, she left the house and everything inside to a special foundation. The house was fixed up and opened as a museum for visitors.
In 1967, Michael and Anna Ancher's house (called Anchers Hus) in Skagen became a museum. The Helga Ancher Foundation made this happen. The museum shows the original furniture and paintings. These artworks were created by the Anchers and other Skagen artists. Art shows are also held in the Saxild House (Saxilds Gaard). This is another building on the property. It displays many paintings by Michael and Anna Ancher. It also features works by their friends, who were also Skagen painters.
On Danish Money
Anna and Michael Ancher were featured on the front of the DKK1000 banknote. This is a Danish thousand-kroner banknote. It was first used on November 25, 2004. The banknote showed a picture of both Anna and Michael Ancher. This picture came from two paintings made in 1884 by Peder Severin Krøyer. These paintings originally hung in the dining room at Brøndums Hotel.
