Anna Cockrell (born August 28, 1997) is an American track and field athlete. She is known for her skills in sprinting and hurdling. Anna has won several medals, including two at the 2019 Pan American Games. She also earned a silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the 400-meter hurdles event.

Early Life and Family

Anna Cockrell was born on August 28, 1997. Her birthplace was San Ramon, California. She is the youngest of three children. Her parents are Serena and Kieth Cockrell. The family later moved from Detroit to Charlotte. All three Cockrell children went to Charlotte Latin School.

Anna comes from a family of athletes. Her father played football at Columbia University. Her older brother, Ross Cockrell, is a professional cornerback. He won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Her older sister, Ciera, played volleyball at Davidson College.

High School Achievements

Anna attended Charlotte Latin School for elementary grades. She then moved to Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina. She graduated from Providence Day School in 2016. Anna was part of the school's track and field team. Coach Carol Lawrence led the team.

In 2016, Anna won a gold medal. This was at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. She won the women's 400 meters hurdles event. Her best time was 55.20 seconds. She also won another gold medal at the same championships. This was for the women's 4 × 400 meters relay event.

College Career at USC

Becoming an NCAA Champion

From 2017 to 2021, Anna competed for the USC Trojans. In June 2019, she became an NCAA champion. She won the women's 400-meter hurdles at the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Her winning time was 55.23 seconds. She had been a runner-up in this event for the two years before.

In August 2019, Anna competed at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. She won a silver medal in the women's 400 meters hurdles. She also earned a gold medal in the women's 4 × 400 meters relay.

Leading the Trojans to Victory

In May 2021, Anna was named the Pac-12 Women's Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year. She helped her school win their third straight conference team title. This was at the 2021 Pac-12 championships. She won both the women's 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles events.

The next month, Anna became the 2021 NCAA champion in two events. She won the women's 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. Her wins helped her school win the team title at the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She ran the 100-meter hurdles in 12.58 seconds. She completed the 400-meter hurdles in 54.68 seconds. She was only the second woman ever to win both events in the same NCAA season. For these achievements, she received the 2021 Honda Sports Award for track and field. She also earned the Pac-12's Tom Hansen Conference Medal.

Anna graduated from the University of Southern California in 2019. She earned a bachelor's degree in communications. She also had a minor in political science. In 2021, she completed her master's degree in public policy.

2020 Summer Olympics

Anna qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics (held in 2021). She competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 27, 2021. She placed third in the women's 400-meter hurdles. This earned her a spot on the team with Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad. She set a new personal and school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.70 seconds.

At the Olympics, Anna made it to the semifinals. She finished third in her heat race with a time of 55.37. In the semifinals, she placed second with a time of 54.17. This secured her a spot in the final race. In the final, she appeared to finish seventh. However, she was later disqualified for a lane violation.

2024 Summer Olympics

Anna competed again at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. She won a silver medal in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. She finished second to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. Anna set a new personal best time of 51.87 seconds in this race.

Anna Cockrell has spoken openly about the importance of mental health for student-athletes. She experienced depression after a hamstring injury in 2019.
