Early Life and Family
Anna Maria Thelott was born in Uppsala, Sweden. Her father, Philip Jacob Thelott the Elder, was an engraver and watchmaker. Her family had moved to Uppsala from Switzerland in the 1670s.
Anna Maria had two brothers who were also artists: Philip Jacob Thelott the Younger and Olof Thelott. Their father taught all of them his artistic skills. They often helped him in his art studio from a young age.
Helping with Big Projects
The family worked together on important projects. For example, they helped Olof Rudbeck illustrate his large books, Atlantica and Campus Elysii. This was a huge task that showed their artistic talent.
Artistic Career
Anna Maria started taking her own art jobs early on. She helped her family by earning money with her art. She created illustrations using different methods. These included drawing, chalcography (a type of engraving), copper engraving, India ink drawings, and woodcuts.
Notable Works
Anna Maria had many interesting commissions.
- She made woodcuts for a newspaper called Posttidningen.
- She created chalcography for prayer books.
- She worked with her brother Philip to illustrate weapons using India ink.
- In 1706, she made eleven woodcuts of German cities for Posttidningen.
- She often illustrated the works of Johan Peringskiöld, a famous historian.
Her art showed many different things. She drew animals, landscapes, and maps. She also created pictures that told stories or had religious themes. She always signed her work with "Anna Marija ein geborene Thelotten."
Later Life and Legacy
In 1702, a big fire happened in Uppsala. After this, Anna Maria and her family moved to Stockholm. Her father lived with her, and she supported him when he could no longer work.
Sadly, Anna Maria Thelott passed away in 1710. She was one of many people who died during a widespread illness in Sweden at that time. She was only about 27 years old.
Anna Maria left behind a special sketch book. It contains drawings she made between 1704 and 1709. This sketch book is now kept at the Uppsala University. It helps us remember her amazing talent.
