She married Robert Dormer, 1st Earl of Carnarvon, and became the Countess of Carnarvon. Robert Dormer became the Earl of Carnarvon in 1628. Anna Sophia died on June 3, 1643, from smallpox. Her husband died a few months later in the First Battle of Newbury.

Early Life of Anna Sophia

Anna Sophia Herbert was born around 1610. Her father was Philip Herbert, 4th Earl of Pembroke. Her mother was Lady Susan de Vere. Lady Susan was the youngest daughter of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford. He was a famous writer and courtier during the time of Queen Elizabeth I.

Marriage and Family Life

On February 27, 1625, Anna Sophia married Robert Dormer, 1st Earl of Carnarvon. This marriage was very important for her future. Robert was one of the richest men in England at that time.

The Countess of Carnarvon and her husband often performed in special court plays called masques. Robert Dormer strongly supported King Charles I. He fought for the King in the English Civil War. This was even though Anna Sophia's father supported the other side.

Their son, Charles Dormer, was born on October 25, 1632. He was baptized in St Benet's in London. Charles later studied at the University of Oxford.

Death and What She Left Behind

Lady Carnarvon died on June 3, 1643. She passed away from smallpox. Stories about her can be found in old writings. A poem was also written for her in 1656.

Lord Carnarvon, her husband, died only a few months after her. He was killed at the first Battle of Newbury on September 20, 1643. He was returning from a successful cavalry charge when a lone soldier attacked him. As he was dying, he said he had no prayer but to the "King of Heaven."

Their oldest son, Charles, became the Earl after his father's death. He also became the Hereditary Chief Avenor. This meant he was in charge of the King's horses. He was also the Keeper of the King's Hawks.

However, Charles Dormer died in 1709 without any sons. Because of this, the title of Earl of Carnarvon in the Dormer family ended.

A portrait of Lady Carnarvon and her son Charles was shown in an art exhibition. This exhibition featured works by the famous artist Anthony van Dyck in 1887.
