History of Annaberg District
The Annaberg district was first created in 1874. This was a time when many areas in Germany were being organized into districts. The main city of the district was formed later, in 1945. This happened when the towns of Annaberg and Buchholz joined together. They became one city called Annaberg-Buchholz, which is now the capital of the district.
Understanding the Annaberg Coat of Arms
The district of Annaberg has a special symbol called a coat of arms. It tells a story about the area's past and important families.
- The top left part shows the symbols of the counts of Schönburg-Waldenburg.
- The middle left part has the symbols of the counts of Werben.
- The bottom left part displays the symbols of the counts of Wolkenstein. These three families owned land in this part of the Ore Mountains a long time ago.
- On the right side, you can see a lion. This lion was the symbol of the margravate of Meissen. This was an older state that came before Saxony. The lion holds mining tools, like a pickaxe. This shows the long history of mining in the Ore Mountains.
