Anne Catherine of Brandenburg (born June 26, 1575 – died April 8, 1612) was the Queen of Denmark and Norway. She was the first wife of King Christian IV of Denmark. She reigned as queen from 1597 until her death in 1612.
Becoming Queen
Anne Catherine was born in a city called Halle (Saale). She grew up in Wolmirstedt. Her parents were Joachim Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg and Catherine of Brandenburg-Küstrin.
In 1595, Christian IV of Denmark met Anne Catherine during a trip to Germany. He decided he wanted to marry her. The next year, Anne Catherine and her parents attended Christian's coronation. In 1597, their marriage was officially arranged.
On November 27, 1597, Anne Catherine became Queen of Denmark. Her wedding to King Christian IV took place in Haderslevhus castle. This was in South Jutland. She was crowned queen in 1598.
Her personal motto was "Rege me Jehova spirito sanctu tuo." This means "Guide me, Jehovah, with your holy spirit." You can still see this motto above the gate to the courtyard of Frederiksborg Castle.
Life as Queen
Queen Anne Catherine often traveled with King Christian. People at the time admired her for being humble and very religious. She did not seem to have much political power.
During her time as queen, the building of Rosenborg Castle began. It is not fully known how much she influenced its design.
She had six children with King Christian IV:
- A son who was stillborn in 1598.
- Frederick (born and died in 1599).
- Christian (born 1603), who was chosen to be the next king. He died before his father.
- Sophie (born and died in 1605).
- Elisabeth (born 1606, died 1608).
- Frederick III (born 1609), who later became king. He made the monarchy in Denmark very powerful.
- Ulrik (born 1611), who was sadly murdered in 1633.
Towards the end of their marriage, her husband had other relationships. Anne Catherine died in Copenhagen on April 8, 1612. She was buried in Roskilde Cathedral.
