Anne Christine of Sulzbach (born February 5, 1704 – died March 12, 1723) was a princess from a German noble family. She was also known as Christine of the Palatinate. Anne Christine became the first wife of Charles Emmanuel of Savoy, who was the Prince of Piedmont and next in line to become King of Sardinia. She passed away at the young age of 19.
Her Early Life
Anne Christine Louise was born a Countess Palatine of Sulzbach. This title meant she was a princess from a specific German region. Her father was Theodore Eustace, the Prince Palatine of Sulzbach. Her mother was Princess Eleonore of Hesse-Rheinfels-Rotenburg.
Anne Christine's family, the Wittelsbachs, was a very important royal family in Bavaria, Germany. Her parents got married in 1692, and Anne Christine was their eighth child.
Her older brother, John Christian, later became the Prince Palatine after their father. His son, Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria, was the last ruler from their specific branch of the Wittelsbach family. Anne Christine also had an older sister named Francisca Christina. She became a very important leader of two convents, Thorn and Essen.
Anne Christine was also a first cousin to her husband's second wife, Polyxena of Hesse.
Marriage and Short Life
On March 15, 1722, Anne Christine married Charles Emmanuel of Savoy in a town called Vercelli. He was the Prince of Piedmont, meaning he was the heir to the throne of the Savoy family. Charles Emmanuel later became the King of Sardinia.
He was the second son of Victor Amadeus II, who was the Duke of Savoy and King of Sardinia. Charles Emmanuel became the heir to the throne in 1715 after his older brother passed away.
Just one year after her marriage, Anne Christine gave birth to a son. He was given the title of Duke of Aosta. Sadly, Anne Christine passed away a few days later, on March 12, 1723, in Turin. She was only 19 years old. Her only child also passed away in 1725, when he was just two years old. This means Anne Christine did not leave any direct descendants.
She was first buried in Turin Cathedral. Later, in 1786, her remains were moved to the Basilica of Superga in Turin.
Her Son
- Prince Vittorio Amedeo Theodore of Savoy (March 7, 1723 – August 11, 1725). He was her only child and passed away when he was very young. He is buried at Superga.
