Anne Donnelly was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1932. She spent her childhood growing up in County Carlow, Ireland.
Anne loved art from a young age. She studied at the National College of Art in Dublin. She finished her studies there in 1953. After that, she continued her art education in other countries. She went to the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Spain. Later, she studied at the Ecole Julienne in Paris, France, finishing in 1956.
While she was in Paris, Anne met her husband, Carlo Mazzantini. He passed away in 2006. Anne and Carlo had four daughters together. Two of their daughters are well-known: Margaret Mazzantini is a novelist, and Giselda Volodi is an actress.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Anne and her family traveled a lot. They visited countries like France, Spain, Ireland, and Morocco. Eventually, they settled in Italy. They first lived in Tuscany and then moved to Tivoli.
