Anne Gelb facts for kids
Anne E. Gelb is a mathematician who studies how numbers and math can help us understand the world better. She is a professor of mathematics at Dartmouth College.
What She Studies
Professor Gelb's research focuses on creating smart ways to analyze data. She develops special math tools that can find important information hidden in different kinds of images and signals. For example, her work helps improve:
- Medical imaging: Making X-rays or MRI scans clearer for doctors.
- Radar imaging: Helping to see things far away, like in weather forecasting.
- Climate science: Understanding weather patterns and changes.
- Fluid dynamics: Studying how liquids and gases move, like water in a river or air around an airplane.
She wants to make these math methods very accurate and fast.
Her Journey in Math
Anne Gelb began her math journey at the University of California, Los Angeles. She earned her first degree in mathematics there in 1989.
She then went to Brown University for her advanced studies. In 1996, she earned her Ph.D., which is a very high degree in her field. Her main teacher there was David I. Gottlieb.
After finishing her Ph.D., she did more research at the California Institute of Technology. In 1998, she started teaching at Arizona State University. Later, in 2016, she moved to Dartmouth College to become a special professor there. She also helped guide the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM).
