Anne K. McKeig (born February 9, 1967) is an important judge on the Minnesota Supreme Court. She made history as the first Native American justice to serve on this court. She is also the first Native American woman to be a judge on any State Supreme Court in the United States. Before joining the Supreme Court, she was a judge for the Minnesota Fourth District Court in Hennepin County from 2008 to 2016.

Early Life and Education
Anne McKeig grew up in a town called Federal Dam, Minnesota. She went to Northland High School in Remer, Minnesota. She is a descendant of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, which is a Native American tribe.
She studied at St. Catherine University and earned a degree called a Bachelor of Arts in 1989. Later, she went to Hamline University School of Law and received her law degree, known as a J.D., in 1992.
Her Career in Law
Helping Children and Families
For more than 15 years, Anne McKeig worked as an assistant attorney for Hennepin County. She focused on cases involving child protection, especially those dealing with Native American children.
Becoming a Judge
In 2008, she became a family court judge for the Minnesota Fourth District Court in Hennepin County. She was appointed by Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty. From 2013, she was the main judge in charge of the family court.
Joining the Minnesota Supreme Court
On June 28, 2016, DFL Governor Mark Dayton chose McKeig to be a justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court. This was a big moment because she became the first Native American justice on the court. She was also the first Native American woman to serve on any state supreme court in the country.
Her appointment also meant that for the second time since 1991, most of the judges on the Minnesota Supreme Court were women. She officially joined the court on August 31, 2016. Her special ceremony, called an investiture, happened on September 15, 2016.
Besides her work as a judge, McKeig also teaches law as a professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
