Anne K. McKeig (born February 9, 1967) is an important judge on the Minnesota Supreme Court. She made history as the first Native American justice on this court. She is also the first Native American woman to serve on any state supreme court in the United States. Before joining the Supreme Court, she was a judge in the Minnesota Fourth District Court in Hennepin County from 2008 to 2016.

Growing Up and Her Education

Anne McKeig grew up in a town called Federal Dam, Minnesota. She went to Northland High School in Remer, Minnesota. Her family is part of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, which is a Native American tribe.

She went to St. Catherine University and earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1989. This is a four-year college degree. Later, in 1992, she earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Hamline University School of Law. A J.D. is a law degree, which means she studied to become a lawyer.

Her Journey in Law

Before becoming a judge, Anne McKeig worked as an assistant attorney for Hennepin County. For over 15 years, she focused on cases involving child protection. She specialized in helping Native American children and families.

In 2008, she became a family court judge in the Minnesota Fourth District Court in Hennepin County. She was appointed by Governor Tim Pawlenty. From 2013, she was the main judge in charge of the family court.

On June 28, 2016, Governor Mark Dayton chose Anne McKeig to join the Minnesota Supreme Court. This was a very important moment because she became the first Native American justice on that court. She was also the first Native American woman to serve on any state supreme court in the country. When she joined, it was also the second time in history that the Minnesota Supreme Court had more women judges than men. She officially started her role on August 31, 2016. Her special ceremony, called an investiture, was held on September 15, 2016.

Besides her work as a judge, Justice McKeig also teaches law. She is a professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law.
