Anne de Mowbray, Baroness Mowbray (born 10 December 1472 – died 19 November 1481) was an important young noblewoman in England. She was the only child of John Mowbray, 4th Duke of Norfolk and Elizabeth Talbot. Anne was born in 1472 at Framlingham Castle in Suffolk, England. She also held the title of Baroness Segrave.

A Young Heiress

When Anne's father passed away in 1476, she became very wealthy. She inherited many lands and titles, including Countess of Norfolk. This made her one of the richest young people in England. Her wealth was very important to the powerful families of the time.

Marriage to a Prince

Anne was married to Richard of York on 15 January 1478. The wedding took place at Westminster Abbey. Richard was the son of King Edward IV of England and Elizabeth Woodville. King Edward IV arranged this marriage. He wanted his son to control Anne's large fortune. After her marriage, Anne became known as the Duchess of York.

Anne's Early Death

Anne died when she was only eight years old. She passed away at Greenwich, London, England, in 1481. Her body was placed in a special lead coffin. This coffin was then buried in the Chapel of St Erasmus of Formiae in Westminster Abbey.

A Lost and Found Coffin

Around 1502, the chapel where Anne was buried was taken down. This was done to make space for a new building called the Henry VII Lady Chapel. During this time, Anne's coffin became lost. For many years, no one knew where it was.

Then, in December 1964, something amazing happened. Construction workers in Stepney, London, accidentally found Anne's coffin. Scientists opened the coffin to study her remains. Anne's body still had a special cloth, called a shroud, wrapped around her. They even found some red hair on her skull. After the scientists finished their study, Anne's body was reburied in Westminster Abbey.
