Anne Patzwald (born July 2, 1989) is a talented German wheelchair basketball player. She played for the German national team at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, where her team won a silver medal. Germany's President, Joachim Gauck, gave the team a special award called the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt (Silver Laurel Leaf) for their amazing sports achievements.
About Anne Patzwald
Anne Patzwald was born in Guben, Germany, on July 2, 1989. After an accident, she became a paraplegic, meaning she couldn't move her legs.
She started playing wheelchair basketball in 2012. Playing sports helped her get better and stronger. She thought about trying wheelchair basketball, table tennis, and badminton.
When she returned home, she found out one of her neighbors played wheelchair basketball. This inspired her to join a local team and start playing too.
Anne's Basketball Career
Anne is classified as a 1.0 point player in wheelchair basketball. This is a system that balances teams based on players' physical abilities.
In 2013, she was chosen for the German national team for players under 25. The very next year, she joined the senior national team.
In 2015, Anne and her team won a gold medal at the European Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Worcester, England.
Her first time competing in the Paralympics was at the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The German team played incredibly well and won a silver medal. In 2016, the German President, Joachim Gauck, honored the team with the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt (Silver Laurel Leaf). This is Germany's highest award for sports.
Anne's Work and Life
Anne Patzwald trained to become an occupational therapist. This job helps people get back to their daily activities after an injury or illness. She studied at a school that was wheelchair accessible and didn't charge fees.
Since September 2017, Anne has worked at the BG Klinikum Hamburg. This clinic is known for hiring athletes. These athletes are great role models and the clinic supports them by allowing time off for training and competitions. Other national team members, like Maya Lindholm, also work there.
