At the same time, she was also the Ambassador to the Holy See, which is the government of the Vatican. The Vatican is the smallest independent state in the world and is the home of the Pope. She officially started this role in May 2006. During her time as Ambassador to the Holy See, she discussed important topics, including the social situation of Aboriginal people in Australia. In July 2008, Australia decided to have a separate ambassador just for the Holy See. Anne Plunkett then continued her work only as the Ambassador to Ireland.

Ambassador to Portugal

In May 2012, Anne Plunkett received another important appointment. She became the Australian Ambassador to Portugal. Portugal is a country in Europe. She started this job at the end of 2012.
