Anne Quatrano's Journey

Anne Quatrano has had an exciting career in the food world. She started by learning about cooking and then opened several successful restaurants.

Early Life and Culinary Start

Anne grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. But she spent her summers on her mother's family farm in Cartersville, Georgia. After college at the University of Vermont, Anne worked in restaurant management. Then, she went to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco to learn cooking.

While at culinary school, Anne was inspired by "California cuisine." This style of cooking uses fresh, local ingredients. She learned from a famous chef named Judy Rodgers. Anne also met her husband, Clifford Harrison, at culinary school. He became her business partner too.

After culinary school, Anne and Clifford moved to New York City. They worked together in several different restaurants there.

Building Her Restaurant Empire

In 1992, Anne and Clifford moved to Georgia. They took over Anne's family farm, which was called Summerland. This farm would later provide fresh food for their restaurants.

Bacchanalia and Star Provisions

In 1993, Anne and Clifford opened their first restaurant, Bacchanalia. It was in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. Bacchanalia served modern American cuisine. They used many ingredients directly from their Summerland farm.

In 1995, Food & Wine magazine named Anne and Clifford "Best New Chefs." This was a big honor!

In 1998, they opened another restaurant called Floataway Café. This one was more casual and located in an old industrial area of Atlanta.

In 1999, Bacchanalia moved to a new spot in Atlanta's Westside Provisions District. Right next to it, Anne and Clifford opened a grocery store called Star Provisions. This store sold gourmet foods and items. In 2017, both Bacchanalia and Star Provisions moved to an even newer building nearby.

In 2003, Anne and Clifford won a very important award. They received the James Beard Award for "Best Chef: Southeast." This award is like the "Oscars" for chefs!

Beyond the Kitchen

Anne Quatrano has also shared her cooking knowledge. In 2013, she published a cookbook called Summerland. The book has recipes and ideas for different seasonal parties and celebrations.

Anne is also a member of the James Beard Foundation Board of Trustees. This means she helps guide the organization that gives out the famous James Beard Awards. In 2018, she led a committee that changed how the awards were judged. They wanted to make sure the chefs nominated were also good role models.
