Anne Spencer's Early Life
Anne was born on February 27, 1683. She was the third daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, a very famous general. Her mother was Sarah Jenyns.
Her father, the Duke of Marlborough, was given a special title by the Holy Roman Emperor, Joseph I. This meant Anne was also considered a princess in some parts of Europe.
Marriage and Family
On January 2, 1700, Anne married Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland. Together, they had five children:
- Robert Spencer, 4th Earl of Sunderland (born 1701, died 1729)
- Lady Anne Spencer (born 1702, died 1769). She married William Bateman.
- Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough (born 1706, died 1758). He later became a Duke.
- Hon. John Spencer (born 1708, died 1746). He was the father of John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer.
- Lady Diana Spencer (born 1710, died 1735). She married John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford.
After her marriage, Anne became known as the Countess of Sunderland in 1702. It's important not to confuse her with her mother-in-law, who was also named Anne Spencer, Countess of Sunderland.
The title of Duke of Marlborough eventually passed from Anne's older sister, Henrietta, to Anne's son, Charles.
