Anne Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Duchess of Sutherland (born April 21, 1829 – died November 25, 1888) was an important British noblewoman. She was also known as the 1st Countess of Cromartie. From 1849 to 1861, people called her the Marchioness of Stafford. She held a special award called the Order of Victoria and Albert.
Her Early Life
Anne Hay-Mackenzie was born on April 21, 1829. She was the only child of John Hay-Mackenzie of Newhall and Cromarty. Her mother was Anne Craig.
Her family had a long history in Scotland. Her great-great-grandfather, George Mackenzie, was the 3rd Earl of Cromartie. He was involved in a historical event called the Jacobite rising in 1745.
Becoming a Countess
On October 21, 1861, a special old title was brought back for Anne. This title, Countess of Cromartie, had belonged to her great-great-grandfather. She was given this title in her own right, meaning she earned it herself.
She also received other titles like Baroness Castlehaven and Viscountess Tarbat. These titles would pass down through her family. The rules for how these titles would be passed on were very specific.
Later, Anne had an important job working for Queen Victoria. She served as the Mistress of the Robes from 1870 to 1874. This meant she was in charge of the Queen's clothes and jewels. For her service, she received the Order of Victoria and Albert.
Her Family Life
On June 27, 1849, Anne married George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower. He was the Marquess of Stafford at the time. In 1861, he became the 3rd Duke of Sutherland. Anne also inherited her father's lands in the year she got married.
Together, Anne and George had five children:
- George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Earl Gower (1850–1858). He sadly passed away when he was young.
- Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland (1851–1913). He later became the 4th Duke of Sutherland.
- Francis Mackenzie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl of Cromartie (1852–1893). He inherited his mother's title, Earl of Cromartie.
- Lady Florence Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1855–1881). She married Henry Chaplin and had children.
- Lady Alexandra Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1866–1891). She never married.
Anne died on November 25, 1888, at the age of 59. She passed away at her family's home in London, called Stafford House. She was buried in Babbacombe Cemetery in Torquay, Devon. After her death, her son Francis inherited her title as Earl of Cromartie. Her husband, the Duke of Sutherland, died in 1892. Their eldest surviving son, Cromartie, then became the 4th Duke.
