Francis Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Cromartie (born Francis Sutherland-Leveson-Gower) was an important British nobleman. He held the title of Earl of Cromartie. He was born in 1852 and passed away in 1893.
Early Life and Family
Francis was born on August 3, 1852. He was the third son of George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 3rd Duke of Sutherland. His mother was Anne, Duchess of Sutherland.
His older brother was Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland. Francis also had two sisters. One sister was Lady Florence, who married Henry Chaplin, 1st Viscount Chaplin. His other sister, Lady Alexandra, passed away in 1891.
Francis's mother, Anne, was a descendant of George Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Cromartie. This ancestor was involved in the Jacobite rising of 1745. Because of this, his titles were taken away in 1746.
Becoming an Earl
Francis inherited his titles after his mother passed away. This happened on November 25, 1888. He became the 2nd Earl of Cromartie. He also gained other titles like Baron Castlehaven and Viscount Tarbat.
In 1879, Francis was recognized as the Chief of the Clan Mackenzie. This meant he was the official leader of the Mackenzie family clan. The main home for the Earls of Cromartie is Castle Leod. This historic castle is located in Strathpeffer, Ross-shire, Scotland.
Personal Life and Daughters
On August 2, 1876, Lord Francis married the Hon. Lillian Janet Bosville-Macdonald. She was the third daughter of Godfrey Bosville-Macdonald, 4th Baron Macdonald.
Francis and Lillian had two daughters:
- Lady Sibell Lilian Mackenzie: She later became the Countess of Cromartie herself. She married Edward Walter Blunt.
- Lady Constance Mackenzie: She married Sir Edward Stewart-Richardson, 15th Baronet. Lady Constance was known for her public performances. Her actions led to her being excluded from royal events.
