Anneila Isabel Sargent (born in 1942) is a famous Scottish-American astronomer. She is an expert in how stars are born.
About Anneila Sargent
Anneila Sargent grew up in Burntisland, Scotland. She went to Burntisland Primary School and Kirkcaldy High School. In 1963, she earned a degree in Physics from the University of Edinburgh.
After that, she moved to the United States. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley. Later, in 1967, she went to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). She earned her Ph.D. there in 1977.
Today, she is a professor of astronomy at Caltech. She used to be the director of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory. This is a place where scientists use special telescopes to study space. She also led the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA).
From 2000 to 2002, she was the president of the American Astronomical Society. This is a big group for astronomers in America. She also worked as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Caltech from 2007 to 2016.
In 2011, President Obama asked her to join the National Science Board. This board helps guide science and engineering in the United States. She has also been part of many other important science committees.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Anneila Sargent has received many awards for her work.
- In 1998, she won the NASA Public Service Medal. This award is for people who do great things for NASA.
- She also won the Caltech Woman of the Year Award in 1998.
- An Asteroid was named after her! It is called 18244 Anneila.
- In 2002, the University of Edinburgh named her Alumnus of the Year. This means she was a very successful former student.
- In 2008, she received an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh.
- In 2017, she became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
- She was elected a Legacy Fellow of the American Astronomical Society in 2020.
- In 2021, she was chosen to be a member of the National Academy of Sciences. This is a very high honor for scientists in the U.S.
- In 2023, she received another Doctor of Science degree from the University of St Andrews.

Anneila Sargent was married to another astronomer named Wallace L. W. Sargent. They had two daughters.
