Annemarie Mol (born September 13, 1958) is a Dutch expert. She studies how people live and think. She is a professor at the University of Amsterdam. There she teaches about the human body.

Mol has won important awards. These include the Spinoza Prize. She also received a grant to study differences in medicine. Later, she got another grant. This one was to study how we eat.

She has helped shape new ideas. These ideas are about science, technology, and medicine. She looks at how healthcare works. She believes that different ways of doing things create different realities. For example, the body can be seen in many ways. It is not just one thing. It can be seen as different things at once. This is a big idea in philosophy. It is about what exists.

Mol also talks about "ontological politics." This means that what we think is real can change. It depends on how we act. Since realities can change, we can also change them. She became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013. She has worked with other smart people, like John Law. She also connects the idea of globalization to nature.

Understanding Annemarie Mol's Ideas

Annemarie Mol studies how we understand the world. She focuses on healthcare. She looks at how doctors and patients interact.

The Body Multiple

Mol's most famous idea is "the body multiple." She says the human body is not just one thing. It is many things at once. For example, a body can be a patient's story. It can also be a doctor's diagnosis. It can be a set of lab results. All these are different "versions" of the body. They exist at the same time.

How Realities Are Made

Mol believes that realities are created. They are made through our actions. They are not just "out there." In healthcare, the way we treat a body shapes what that body is. If you treat a body as a collection of organs, that's one reality. If you treat it as a person with feelings, that's another.

Ontological Politics

This idea means that we can change reality. Since our actions create reality, we can choose different actions. This can lead to different outcomes. For example, how we organize healthcare can change what health means. It can also change how we experience illness.
