Early Life and Education
Annie Murphy was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, on December 19, 1986. Her parents were both teachers. She went to high school at Elmwood School, where she acted in school plays.
After high school, Murphy attended Queen's University for a year. She then moved to Concordia University and earned a degree in theatre. Later, she studied at the Canadian Film Centre Actors' Conservatory to improve her acting skills. When she was 22, she moved to Los Angeles to start her acting career.
Acting Career
Early Roles
Murphy began her career in 2007 with a role in the TV movie Lethal Obsession. For several years, she played small parts in Canadian movies and TV shows. She said that during this time, she was a "struggling actress" who wanted to be in comedies, but she was mostly offered roles in dramas.
She also appeared in American TV shows like The Beautiful Life: TBL, Blue Mountain State, and Beauty & the Beast.
Breakthrough with Schitt's Creek
By 2013, Murphy was thinking about quitting acting. Her house had burned down, she had almost no money, and she hadn't worked as an actress in nearly two years. She felt like her acting career was over.
Just two days after feeling hopeless, she got an audition for the comedy series Schitt's Creek. She won the part of Alexis Rose, a funny and fashionable character. She played Alexis for all six seasons of the show, from 2015 to 2020. The role made her famous and earned her many awards. In 2020, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in the show's final season.
Roles After Schitt's Creek
After Schitt's Creek ended, Murphy was cast as the main character in the TV series Kevin Can F... Himself. She also played a younger version of a character in the Netflix show Russian Doll in 2022.
In 2023, she starred with actress Salma Hayek in the "Joan Is Awful" episode of the popular series Black Mirror. She has also done voice acting for animated shows like American Dad! and the movie Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.
Other Work
Besides acting, Murphy has appeared in commercials for well-known companies. She was in holiday ads for the Hudson's Bay department store with her Schitt's Creek co-star Catherine O'Hara. She also appeared in ads for the meal-kit company HelloFresh and for Nintendo Switch.
Charity Work
Murphy is an ambassador for Care Canada, an organization that helps people around the world. In 2019, she traveled to Jordan to learn how the organization helps women and girls there. In 2021, she sold the dress she wore to her first red carpet event. She donated the money to a group that helps homeless people in Toronto.
Personal Life
In 2011, Murphy married Menno Versteeg, a singer and musician. In 2013, their home was damaged in a fire. Thankfully, they were not hurt, but they lost many of their belongings.
Murphy has a tattoo on her wrist of the actor James Stewart. She was inspired by his performance in the movie Harvey, which she described as "heartbreaking, sweet, and funny."
