Annie Murphy (born December 19, 1986) is a Canadian actress. She became famous for playing Alexis Rose in the TV show Schitt's Creek (2015–2020). For this role, she won a Primetime Emmy Award and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
Murphy has also starred in other TV series. These include the comedy Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021–2022) and Russian Doll (2022). She also appeared in the "Joan Is Awful" episode of Black Mirror (2023). She lent her voice to the animated movie Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023).

Early Life
Annie Murphy was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This was on December 19, 1986. Both of her parents were teachers. She went to high school at Elmwood School in Ottawa. There, she acted in school plays.
Murphy studied at Queen's University for one year. Then, she moved to Concordia University and earned a degree in theatre. She also trained at the Canadian Film Centre Actors' Conservatory.
At age 22, she moved to Los Angeles. She wanted to become an actress.
Career
Annie Murphy started her acting career in 2007. Her first role was in the TV movie Lethal Obsession. She then had small roles in Canadian films. These included Story of Jen (2008) and Lick (2010). She also appeared in Canadian TV shows. Some of these were Good God (2012) and Rookie Blue (2012). Murphy has said that she struggled to find acting jobs. She wanted to do comedies but mostly got drama roles.
She also appeared in American TV series. These included The Beautiful Life: TBL (2009) and Blue Mountain State (2010).
In 2013, Murphy was thinking about quitting acting. But then, she auditioned for Schitt's Creek. She got the role of Alexis Rose. She later shared that before this, she was having a very tough time. She felt like giving up on acting. But then, the audition for Schitt's Creek came up. She played Alexis Rose for all six seasons. The show ran from January 2015 to April 2020.
After Schitt's Creek, Murphy moved to Toronto. She helped create and starred in The Plateaus. This was a web series from 2015 about musicians. Her acting in The Plateaus earned her a nomination. It was for Best Performance in a Digital Media Program. She also received many nominations for her role in Schitt's Creek. These included Canadian Screen Awards and Critics' Choice Television Awards. In 2019, she won a Gracie Award for Best Actress in a Breakthrough Role. In September 2020, she won a Primetime Emmy Award. This was for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Schitt's Creek.
In 2020, she was cast as the main character in Kevin Can F**k Himself. This is a dark comedy series on AMC. Production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It started filming in September 2020.
In 2022, Murphy played a younger Ruth Brenner. This was in the Netflix series Russian Doll. In 2023, she appeared in an episode of Black Mirror. The episode was called "Joan Is Awful". She acted alongside Salma Hayek.
Activism
Murphy is an ambassador for Care Canada. This is a global relief organization. In 2019, she visited Jordan. She went to learn about Care's work. They help empower women and girls there. In January 2021, she helped homeless people in Toronto. She donated money from an auction of her first red carpet dress.
Personal Life
Annie Murphy married singer Menno Versteeg in August 2011. He is the lead singer of the bands Hollerado and Anyway Gang. In 2013, a fire happened at their home. They were not hurt, but they lost most of their belongings.
Murphy has a tattoo of James Stewart on her wrist. She loves his acting in the movie Harvey. She says his performance was "heartbreaking, sweet, and funny".
